“gorgeous little theatre”
Reviewed 31 March 2012

the Theatre Royal has been going strong over 100 years. It is a beautifully restored theatre and has an active and varied program of theatre, comedy, musicals, opera, magicians etc. Worth going there for the surrounds alone.
There is also a small theatre off the side alley (Backspace theatre) for smaller, more intimate works.
Program is available on line or in programs found in foyer. Free parking spot for 5 mins only outside.
Stairs access only to circle and galley. Galley not used so often but has hard wooden benches!

“Intimate and Charming: a must do Theatrical Experience”
Reviewed 22 March 2012

If you're coming to Hobart when something is happening at the Theatre Royal, along with going to MONA - Australia's newest and most innovative arts experience - it's a must-do to catch a show at the oldest theatre in Australia. Beautiful restored and maintained, the theatre is a lovely place to enjoy some of Australia's iconic theatrical experiences.

“The Authenic Theatre Royal”
Reviewed 17 March 2012

If my memory serves me correctly, this is the oldest continual working theatre in the southern hemisphere. What old world charm it has. The audio in here is excellant. One can only hope that it is not lost to a more modern building.
