Owner description: The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

This hour long tour takes you through all parts of the theatre where you guide will regal you with great stories of the history of the theatre, the very famous actors who have performed there and of course the tale of the resident ghost, Fred! So if you have a spare hour when visiting Hobart this tour should be added to your list of things to do.

We came here to see a performance of Handel's Orlando - much enjoyed in this small Victorian theatre.
Note the foyers and toilet facilities are extremely small

Saw this for the first time in 2011. There is not something on every night, but the building itself is a 19th century gem. In 2011, we saw Josh Thomas, the Australian comedian, perform. We were luckier last week as it was a Baroque Handel opera, "Orlando": a perfect fit. Unique for me is that you can take your drinks from the bar into the auditorium: never saw that before.

Went to see David Helfgott perform - absolutely brilliant. Sat in the circle and felt like we were almost on the stage. The setting is olde world - from the century before last! wonderful acoustics and ambience. Looking forward to the next time..........

From the moment we walked in, we were transported into a magical feeling of old world charm. The ceilings, lightings, plush velvet seats, gold ornate walls and trims all add to the authenticity of a theatre and the promise of a good night out. It has great acoustics and an excellent ambience. We went to watch "The Topp Twins" and obviously it must be very popular as it was sold out. From conversations with a lovely lady sitting next to me , this little gem holds a very special place in the hearts of the locals.
We returned a few nights later to watch a performance by The Grigoryan Brothers at the Backstage, a very cosy and intimate performance space at the back of the theatre. It too was almost a sell out show.
The icing on the cake is that the price of the tickets were very reasonable.
