Owner description: Louisa's Walk is a piece of Strolling Theatre or Walking Play that takes you on a journey into the life of Louisa Ragan, an Irish convict, sent to Van Diemen's Land on a seven year sentence, in 1841, for stealing a loaf of bread. You walk with the actors as they tell Louisa's story. You will meet Louisa outside the famous Cascade Brewery building in South Hobart. You will walk through the beautiful Cascade Gardens along to the World Heritage listed Cascades Female Factory Historic Site where Louisa was imprisoned. Once you enter those locked gates, they are shut behind you and you experience life in this harsh prison. You may laugh and you may cry but you will remember Louisa's story!

“excellent tour - but avoid the cruise ships!”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

What a wonderful way to learn about the convict history of hobart an the womens factory. The actors were engaging and the experience enriching.

I would recommend trying to avoid booking on a day when a cruise ship is in though! the group on our day was rude to the actors and chattered inanely throughout which did distract from our enjoyment of the tour.

Nothing to dislike about this tour/re-enactment. It was riveting from beginning to end. We were transported in time by the superb acting and audience engagement. Would thoroughly recommend this.

“The recommendations are spot on.”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

We went on this walk as a result of the recommendations on Tripadvisor and were not disappointed.

When you think of convicts in Tasmania, your first thought is Port Arthur. One of the things that we learnt on this enjoyable and interesting walk was that at times there were more female prisoners in the Cascades Female Factory than male prisoners at Port Arthur.

We had a pleasant lunch before the walk in the cafe at the Cascade Breweries Visitors' Centre (just over the road from the start of the walk).

“Herstory bringing history alive”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

This was the highlight of our historic based journey through Tasmania with our Aussie friends, one of whom has a great grandmother who was transported to Tassie.

The two actors used very few props but with lively interpretation allowed your own imagination to run free. A gentle amble to the "women's factory" with little scenes in the journey of "Louisa" from Irish widow in London through transportation to a varied life in Australia. Thought provoking and touching with the audience being involved along the way. There is little left of the factory now but sufficient to allow you to dread the thought of what those women went through.

If you have any imagination and are willing to allow yourself to be absorbed by a story based on a real life then you will enjoy this. We all thought it excellent value.
