North Melbourne is great location to stay. Easy tram access lovely pubs with cheap meals within walking distance. The apartment itself was ok, just ok, but as it is in the ''cheaper'' bracket in Melbourne you can put up with it.
But and a big but, do not expect to get much sleep. The sleep quality was the just about the worst we have expearianced. Arden street is a very busy road and the trucks and cars do not stop regardless of the time. The walls must be paper thin and the windows single glazed, so as a result we simply had no sleep on our first night. The following day we purchased some ear plugs which helped somewhat, but I am sorry to say there will be no repeat stay for us.

We have stayed here before, a few years ago, & found the apartments to be great value & clean. They are on a direct, frequent tram route into the city but are also still within walking distance of the shops & restaurants of Errol Street, North Melbourne. This time, however, was a different story! On the 2nd day we had gone out for the day leaving the dishwasher on & when we opened it to empty it there were cockroaches crawling out!! I made a quick phone call to some after hours number as it was early evening by this time. They appeared most concerned & said they'd send someone to "spray" in the morning but as it was the weekend weren't sure. We had to re-wash the contents of the dishwasher & therefore the small amount of detergent was not sufficient so we had to ask for more. It appeared that some powder had been put down after this but obviously not enough to fix the problem! It was reported to them again & they offered to swap apartments when one became available but we just asked for the problem to be dealt with. In the 9 nights we stayed there we had no linen change even although this is supposed to be done every 7 nights. The towels were "changed" i.e. thrown in the bathroom door. This seemed to constitute a "light service". The entry area to the apartments was really filthy - not a good first impression. One of the windows in the apartment had no latch on it as it had long since broken off. This meant that a child could easily have fallen out to a certain death as the apartment was on the upper floor! Also the fire alarm had a plastic bag over it. I brought all of these things to the attention of the management as they were serious problems. They were to be fixing them they said. The standard had definitely deteriorated in the 5 years since we'd last stayed there.

Room Tip: Ask for an apartment which does not front onto the passing trams!

I booked this apartment despite the negative reviews on TripAdvisor, which unfortunately turned out to be a mistake. The traffic noise was absolutely unbearable at night time and woke us up at 5.30am. I live on a main road with tram line, but the high volume of large trucks travelling down Arden Street were unbearable. More sound-proofing is definitely required to make the room livable.

Other issues included:
- Double room was actually two single beds pushed together - too short for a tall adult
- There are no takeaway food options nearby in the area. Recommend dining out on Errol Street instead
- No parking included and reception located a suburb away in Carlton (however this information is clearly advertised, so I was prepared for this)

On a positive note, the staff on check-in were very friendly and welcoming, and the apartment itself was comfortable, spacious and well-appointed.

If you drive a car, then there will be a problem: only 2 hourly restricted parking on the street. If you are planning to see Melbourne CBD during your stay, where do you leave your car during the day? If you not driving, I can't imagine to pick up the key from the office 2km away from the apartment walking with your luggage!
Apartment itself very modern, clean, but extreme noisy from busy traffic, and that won't stop at night. We were very tired and was hoping to get a good night sleep but that didn't happen.
We were going to stay at the apartment for 4 nights but had to cancel after first night's stay.

We were happy with our studio apartment. Clean, modern with a little private courtyard.

Annoying that you have to pick the keys up from a different location.

We booked a double room and got two single beds pushed together. :(

We were in apartment 8 and the people in the room above us were constantly stomping around. It may have been the cleaners room or the stairs but every morning we were woken but stomping!

I would stay here again and ask for a different room.

For a group of three friends stopping over in Melbourne to watch the tennis, a stay at the British Apartments turned out to be a good choice overall and we would certainly stay there again.

The pros were the price (about $70/pp/pn for 3 people staying in a 1 bed appt), the cleanliness of the apartment, the (relatively) central location and the convenience of being close to a major tram line.

The only cons were the traffic noise (ear plugs recommended) and fact that you have to pick keys up from a location about 5 mins drive away in Carlton. Also, beware - the key pick up office is well-hidden - the actual address is cunningly disguised as a laundrette !
You don't have to take the keys back though when you check out, which I guess was a bit of a bonus.

There was nothing much to see or do around the hotel, but it was only a 10 min ($8) taxi ride to Fitzroy with its' wealth of excellent pubs and restaurants.

The appt. was well equipped with a TV, Dvd player and a little kitchenette. I think that we'd have needed more kitchen equipment for a longer stay ( eg. we couldn't find a chopping board ) but it was fine if you're planning on eating out most of the time.

We got a fantastic deal on the jetstar website for this place, and it was a really good self catering option. The tram stop couldn't be closer, it takes 10 mins or so to get you bang smack in the centre of Melbourne. My only complaint would be the tiny ants that were in the bathroom and along the skirting board next to our bed, we soon forgot about them though. Don't know if they are easy to get rid of however? The studio apartment was stylish and had everything you could need, and dishwashing and washing machine powder were provided daily. It was a quiet location, ideal for a 5 day stay as we did.
Note - make sure you get a myki card from a 7 eleven as you can't jump on the tram until you do - we walked into the city centre on the first day as a result. Not a bad walk if you are active though!
