Flinders Backpackers

Our first experience of backpackers accommodation in Australia. In hindsight it was more expensive than the average backpackers in Australia (we stayed in Sydney for half the price). The room was clean, cool and comfortable with the added bonus of a TV. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and toilets/showers were plentiful in supply. The kitchen was dirty and the staff faced a constant battle in cleaning it as the guests didn't seem to care. Breakfast was free (bonus)!!! The rest of the social areas seemed unclean and overrun with young drunken backpackers - we avoided this area completely. Good location to explore Melbourne as near trams/trains and buses.

This was my first stay in a hostel. I stayed here for three nights and would not have stayed any longer. Our room was with shared facilities which really bothered me before I arrived but was ok in the end a bit like camping... without the tent! However I only showered once as there was no hot water after that so it was really pot look to get a warm shower. My bed was really uncomfortable, probably because the mattress was shaped like a banana so I was sleeping in a dip. My companions' wasn't so bad though. The room was really small and very little space. There was a telly, fan and small wardrobe in our room but that was all. I imagined people to be friendly at hostels but no one was, everyone was quite moody even the staff. The lifts were useless, there is a card system to get up and down in the lift and so many people complained as the cards were not working. The lift kept going past our floor to the top floor and then back to the bottom. We spent a lot of time just trying to get to our room! The hostel is off Flinders Street not on Flinders Street which confused us on arrival. I didn't find the hostel value for money at all, the internet was very slow and expensive and if you walked 3 minutes up the street to a convenience store you could get it for a third of the price, quicker and with skype. The rooms were not cheap considering what they were. I go a 4* hotel in sydney for the same price and that had a kitchen and bathroom. The location however is excellent literally in the middle of everything which was it's saving grace.

This hostel is really good situated near to shops, bars, and the really nice Flinder Station. If you spend a lot of time out of the hostel sightseeing it's not to bad. Anyway, the staff is nice and the community area is really relaxing and comfie.....but the rooms and the bathroom facilities are a big no-go! Especially the shower curtains need to be changed. Additionally, it's really loud cause there are several bars in the same complex. Well, if you don't care about all of that, you should go there. But you could a s well find nicer places for better money. To be honest, my boyfriend and me didn't sleep there a night cause we left right after we saw our room...
