“Good Hotel - Great location, small letdowns”
Reviewed 26 March 2011

We stayed at the Hilton South Wharf during the Melbourne Wine and Food festival. It was the ideal location as everything is in walking distance and when you are at a wine and food festival, that's a big factor. We stayed two nights. I sometimes wonder whether booking through Wotif or similar sites they decide to give you a room that is on the "B" list. Anyhow we had a room that had a great view overlooking the DFO car park. The room was comfortable enough with a great bathroom and the bed was one of the nost comfortable beds I have slept in in a hotel.
The first morning we decided to get breakfast and didn't want the buffet as it is always too much so we thought the coffee shop would be a good option. At 8.00am it wasn't open, and when inquiring with the doorman he said it should be open and didn't know when it would, maybe in the next half an hour. We then decided to try the restaurant and see if they do a la carte. They did, so we were taken to our table and handed a menu. The restaurant was not very full with only a handful of tables occupied. We placed our order and waited and waited and waited, 20 minutes later we asked as to the progress of our order. The waiter came back to inform us that it would be prepared shortly. That's when we walked out!
Overall a good hotel let down by some average service.

I stayed at the Hilton in March, ostensibly for business but was joined by my partner. We stayed in a Yarra suite. The room was a good size, with a reasonable view. It was in the middle of the hotel rather than in one of the upper floors, which surprised me a little. The deals offered on lastminute.com were excellent.

The spread in the lounge was excellent, the staff were helpful and polite. The beds were extremely comfortable and the showers were excellent, with a choice of two shower nozzles, a rain shower and more conventional one.

Overall, a very good example of its class. The only caveat is that the hotel is a little out of the way comparative to a hotel closer to the CBD...you can't really walk to anything and there isn't an overabundance of the cafes that Melbourne is known for.

We were on a girls trip ( kids & hubby's @ home - yahoo) to Melbourne to celebrate a friends special birthday. After months reading reviews on trip advisor we decided on the Hilton South Wharf ( mainly due to it's proximity to the DFO )
Initially we had a little hiccup at check-in with the front desk despite ringing & confirming the day before which was a little disappointing. However once mentioning this to our fabulous host (Steven) in the Executive lounge this was quickly rectified by the equally professional & efficient duty manager Nic who went beyond our expectations to resolve the situation - resulting in an upgrade ( which was very generous) .
The two bedroom apartment was very spacious considering you are staying in a hotel. The bathrooms were beautiful and the little touches like the " Crabtree & Evelyn" products well received . The pillows were very luxurious & bed divine. Jury is still out on the electric blinds- found it a little confusing waking up to pitch dark . If staying longer than a night you will need to call house keeping to ask for turn down service- well worth it as you get to keep the little gifts which are left on the pillows as a nice reminder once back @ home.
Guess it depends what you are looking for but the hotel is a little out from the CBD but the DFO next door provided hours of entertainment & the walk into the CBD was good exercise . Crown complex is an easy walk away.
Executive lounge is fantastic simply due to the good old fashioned friendly service. If you ask -they deliver . Steven,Dolphin & Tarryn always had a smile on their face & were extremely helpful. They even presented my friend with a birthday cake . Worth the extra $'s - the only problem was that we were so comfortable we rarely left the hotel.

I have travelled across Australia and the United States and I have high standards for accommodation and the Hilton Southwarf exceeded my expectations beyond belief. We were greeted from the start by many friendly staff members offering assisstance with parking and luggage and then given a complimentary upgrade to the Yarra suite without asking. The suite was unbelievable from the small shell gift on the bed to the panoramic views if the Yarra river. There was also a kitchen, washer/dryer, loungeroom and a huge bedroom. The bathrooom was also large with a bath overlooking the city. The location was fantastic just up from the Crowne Casino and next to the DFO shopping outlet. Breakfast was delicious and again the staff were friendly and helpful. I would 100% recommend this hotel. Thankyou Hilton.

The one week stay was booked with Hilton points + up-grade to a King Yarra suite with cash. When arriving I was not sure if this was a good choice: in the middle of motorways, parking lots all around and mid-class shopping next door. However, the perceptions started to change after entering the hotel. Welcoming lobby, picture perfect check-in layout with helpful and professional staff. The Yarra suites are worth the price, spacious and very functional. The minus is that window space to the lounge is limited, and some of that space will be blocked by the courtains. The bathroom will make you smile but beware the slippery floor by the shower. My partner slipped when getting out as the floor is very well polished. For a one week stay the wardrobe was a bliss with great space for everything.

The views are perhaps the main concern - from the top suite you'd expect more of the city rather than "asfalt view". However, during the week one starts (or is forced to) to find beauty in the view available and learns to look further afield too.

Executive lounge is very spacious and has a lot of light. Selection of food is ok, even if the evening service is a bit on the deep-fried side. As there is a wider selection of drinks (i.e. strong booze) available, it would be nice to have some information available about it. During the stay it seemed to be a service only for the ones "in the know".

Location, location location... Even if the first impressions were putting off, the location is actually very good. Not in the thick of things, but close enough. Trams are nearby, CBD is within walking distance and airport is very accessible. Shopping next door is more outlet than LVHM.

The hotel does deliver a nice touch with frangrant items as a part of turndown - and had made a note about the last night with a special momento. However, turndown is also know as night service and would be better delivered around 7 pm rather than just after 5 pm.

In summary: few edges to polish but still a gem in the Hilton jewellery.

I'm a regular traveller to Melbourne and on nights that I have to stay I like somewhere that is uncomplicated, friendly and has great service.

The Hilton South Wharf was an accidental find, but one I will keep going back to - for a start it is new and clean, the staff make your stay effortless, and I leave next day with a sense of being well looked after. The hotel is also within walking distance to the Casino and a myriad of restaurants and bars.
