The one week stay was booked with Hilton points + up-grade to a King Yarra suite with cash. When arriving I was not sure if this was a good choice: in the middle of motorways, parking lots all around and mid-class shopping next door. However, the perceptions started to change after entering the hotel. Welcoming lobby, picture perfect check-in layout with helpful and professional staff. The Yarra suites are worth the price, spacious and very functional. The minus is that window space to the lounge is limited, and some of that space will be blocked by the courtains. The bathroom will make you smile but beware the slippery floor by the shower. My partner slipped when getting out as the floor is very well polished. For a one week stay the wardrobe was a bliss with great space for everything.
The views are perhaps the main concern - from the top suite you'd expect more of the city rather than "asfalt view". However, during the week one starts (or is forced to) to find beauty in the view available and learns to look further afield too.
Executive lounge is very spacious and has a lot of light. Selection of food is ok, even if the evening service is a bit on the deep-fried side. As there is a wider selection of drinks (i.e. strong booze) available, it would be nice to have some information available about it. During the stay it seemed to be a service only for the ones "in the know".
Location, location location... Even if the first impressions were putting off, the location is actually very good. Not in the thick of things, but close enough. Trams are nearby, CBD is within walking distance and airport is very accessible. Shopping next door is more outlet than LVHM.
The hotel does deliver a nice touch with frangrant items as a part of turndown - and had made a note about the last night with a special momento. However, turndown is also know as night service and would be better delivered around 7 pm rather than just after 5 pm.
In summary: few edges to polish but still a gem in the Hilton jewellery.
