Ive stayed in many hostels throughout Australia including non-YHA's. Overall I would say this is the best. I was paying $32 per night to stay in a room that was cleaned every day along with the toilets. To pay $3 less in another hostel thats dirty just isnt worth it.
It can be noisy at times which is a pain when your trying to sleep but at the end of the day, I was staying in a city centre hostel.
Great staff. The hot girl at reception with the black hair booked some tours for me and made me feel very welcome!
I hope to return one day.

Thanks guys!

Room Tip: rooms are best on levels 2, 3 and 4 so you dont have to walk past reception when your drunk :)

I stayed at Yha Central a week ago.
All I have to say is great things about it, the place is very VERY clean, the rooms are a bit small but okay and the service was great.
I would highly recomend to anyone who is seeking a central hostel with great service.

I stayed here a week ago and it was my first stay at any YHA hostel. From what I believe there is a standard which is set for all YHAs. If so, this is horrible! I was rudely woken by a loud speaker they have blasting through the entire hostel warning guests to check out! I arrived at 3am! I had items that had been stolen from my room which I told reception staff and they said it always happens. I tried to book trips with the staff but was rudely pushed away for guests checking in. the girl Ana at reception had sworn behind the desk, no at me but because she was stressed, very poor service from her when I asked for some information on activities to do around melbourne, her advice was look at the brochures on the stand! It was a good location but no if you want a good sleep, noisy bar, trams, trains and microphone throughout the hostel. Absolutely disgusting service!

Room Tip: lift doesnt work all the time and occasionally you may get stuck!

It was our first time traveling to Melbourne and despite maybe a few unpleasant reviews, i chose to stay here anyways. And i did make a good decision.

If i must give a constructive comment, i'd say maybe one of the front office staffs need to be more friendly. But nonetheless, he was very helpful. And his being less-friendly did not ruin our stay.

MCYHA is less than 10 minutes walk from Southern Cross Station and strategically located near most must-go places in Melbourne, halal restaurants (Nando's, Es Teler 77 and Lord of The Fries, to name a few), and two 7-Elevens. Try to beat that (then again, maybe there are lots of 7-Elevens in Melbourne City, plus points!)

The room (we got a twin room) and (common) bathrooms are clean and comfortable. There are kitchens and TV room on every floor. Security-wise, it is very safe here as you need to swipe your card at all doors to get in (you don't have to swipe your card to get out). The rooftop is also a very nice place to hang out at.

You may either opt for WiFi (at a fee) or go to the internet cafe, just next door. There's the Neighbours Center next door - it's like a one-stop center for information and tours. Flinders Street Station is also in the same street; ditto Federation Square. There's a tram-stop right in front of the hostel.

We didn't even use the public transport within Melbourne as it was easy to move around (again, because of MCYHA's very good location). We even walked around the city until close to midnight; it was safe :D

I'm glad that i chose MCYHA and i will not hesitate to stay here again. Staying here made our visit to Melbourne a great experience. Thank you MCYHA :D

Room Tip: If you want privacy, just get a twin room like we did. Otherwise, the dorms would be nice.

I stayed at the YHA in Melbourne in the beginning of December for a few nights in a twin bunk bed room. Nothing impressive, but no complaints. However I have just stayed there for 5 nights over the F1 weekend, I stayed in a double, a mens 4 dorm for 2 nights and a twin bunk bed room for 2 nights. Rooms were again simple, nothing impressive however my girlfriends mattress in the twin room was covered in hair and obviously the sheets hadn't been changed. We told reception and they did nothing so we took some new sheets ourselves and made the bed up. The bathrooms on the third floor were also a state the entire time. Toilets had been cleaned to a rubbish standard and half the lights didn't work. Again told the staff and they did nothing. And then on the final day of checkout we had to leave our suitcases for 1 hour whilst we went to get breakfast before heading to the airport and they charged us. I think there needs to be a new management and a complete new staff system. Not morons who use most of their thinking capability for breathing. Rude, unfriendly and loud. The worst hostel ever. DO NOT STAY HERE, GO TO ONE IN ST.KILDA.
