We stayed here for a night after flying into Melbourne and enjoyed it. Our room, a deluxe studio suite, was very well furnished and had a kitchenette so you could self cater if you wanted to. The bed was extremely comfortable and they supplied all you needed, although some of the complimentary items such as tea, coffee etc and other bathroom items were hidden away in cupboards and not obviously noticeable.

The Blackman does not have a restaurant as such but there is a French Patisserie/Coffee shop by the entrance which provided an excellent breakfast facility and also an Italian restaurant on the other side of the entrance which does all meals. You do not have to walk far to find other shops and restaurants and there is a tram stop close by for transport into the city.

Our only criticism would be that you have to pay for Wifi, which most other hotels we have stayed in provide free.

Having said that it is a really nice hotel with helpful staff and located in a nice neighbourhood with a park and the Botanical Gardens close by.

The Blackman was a one of a kind feel hotel. The fixtures, fittings and decorations of the lobby and rooms suggest that this hotel is a recent refurbishment. The room we stayed in was brilliant, with exceptional views out accross St Kilda and into the city. Room was kept clean and staff were always friendly, and uninvasive. Travelling into the city was simple, as a main tram line ran in the adjacent street down St Kilda Road. A cab to the waterfront/Crown Casino was about $15.00. Downstairs features a small bar/italian restaurant and a small bakery, freshly baking each day -- both a magnificent standard.

Would definitely recommend as a couples retreat, as it's a quiet and intimate spot. If you're looking for a higher energy spot, I'd recommend something by the river, down by the Casino.

Great hotel rooms and location. We stayed in a suite which had a balcony overlooking Albert Park Lake and out to the Bay. Check in was efficient, staff were professional but not friendly. They were understaffed on this particular Saturday evening. I called down to reception from my room and was on hold for 5 minutes and ended up hanging up and just walking down there. Not great.

The rooms themselves are the standout and the location is convenient to all that Melbourne has to offer.

Thank you Harvey for taking the time to review our property after your stay. We pride ourselves on providing the highest level of customer service and I am sorry to hear that on this occasion we have not delivered. Our front desk always operates with a full team and while I am sure that you can understand that Saturday nights can be busier than others I am sorry that your enquiry was not dealt with in a timely manner. I am happy that you enjoyed your room and our location and hope to welcome you back to The Blackman again.

I'm staying in this hotel this week. The room is well equipped, with a small hob stove, microwave, dishwasher and fridge. The room is also a good size and well designed. If I had a complaint it would be about the bathroom, the sink is a little shallow, the bath toiletry tray in the wrong place as it makes the shower too small to stand in (moving it half a metre would solve the issue).

The other issue I have, also very small, is the Classico restaurant in the hotel is too successful therefore too busy. It can be difficult to get a seat, but it is possible to order room service from the restaurant which is still excellent food.

Location was great for me, as it was across the street from where I was working this week.

Room Tip: I was on the 12 floor could hear the tram noise when away early...but it wasn't loud enough to w...

Another in the Art Series in Melbourne, this is a great hotel, close to the city. In keeping with the others the "signature" beds are astonishingly comfortable, rooms well appointed and staff attentive. The in house Italian restaurant was excellent and quite different from the usual hotel offering - genuinely felt like an independent restaurant with superb food and standout service. Well recommended for a weekend in Melbourne.

I have stayed at the other two Art Series hotels before (The Olsen and The Cullen), and I was wondering why The Blackman ranks the highest out of the three. So on one of the hottest weekends in Melbourne, I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to try it, and now I know why. Whereas The Olsen tends to be too posh (for the A-listers) and The Cullen too avant-garde, The Blackman strikes a good balance between those qualities.

Location-wise, it is more a "calm refuge" than "party central", which could be a drawback to some people, but it was just what I needed. The Albert Park lake (great for a leisurely jog in the morning or afternoon) and sports centre are just a few minutes' walk away, whereas the CBD can be reached by a short tram ride. Or you can rent a bike from the hotel.

My room has a relaxing vibe and a beautiful view of the lake. The bed is very comfortable, and I like the lighting design. There are other nice touches such as the kitchenette and the funkily packaged bathroom amenities (they smell good, too). What's more, the minibar items and snacks are not exorbitantly priced, unlike some other hotels of this standing. Wi-Fi is still not free, though.

The gym's small and there's no pool (guests can use the pool at The Olsen but it's hardly worth the effort to go there), but in Melbourne this is not a must (Sydney hotels have better pools and gyms). I didn't get to try the Italian restaurant (Classico), but the coffee and French pastries at Depot du Pain were very good. The Blackman definitely has its charms, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.
