The Olsen is on our companies preferred list and I stay there every couple of weeks. The rooms are not huge, however they are clean and well fitted out. The staff are always incredibly helpful and go out of their way to be accommodating.

A great hotel in a great location

Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. Regular guests get to see everything about the hotel. It's great to see that after a number of visits you enjoy coming back here to stay. It also pleases us to read that you have received quality service from our staff. In most cases it is the staff that can make a difference to your experience.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

We checked into the olsen after making the booking direct with the hotel.. this was all good, the operator on the phone was very good actually. When 'game day' arrived we rocked up at about 4 pm and was greeted by some dude in a black shirt who approached our car (as i was unloading our bags) and just stood there and watched me do it !! no offer of help, not even a hello or welcome to the olsen... nothing !! He just stood there with a blank look on his face and did not utter one word.... i thought this was incredibly starange so i actually thought he may hav bin a guest who maybe wanted directions from me..??!! AMAZING - he did not say a word..!! Anyway... the wife and i just walked straight past him... he was stiill just standing ther doing nothing... We walked into the foyer and checked in..the foyer is cool.. the hotel is trying its darndest to be 'sheek' and it offers a boutique like feel as soon as you step in... The service at the front desk was fine.. Our room (the penthouse on the 14th floor was much smaller than i expected... funnily enuff it was dearer than the 2 bed suites but not as big and has no balcony (our rate was 340 bux) The rooms are still pretty new and have a clean feel (but waaaay to small to be called a penthouse !! i reckon) Great beds...
We dined at the resturant down stairs called Steer... amazing beef selection...very good beef too i might add (my steak cost me 100 bux) Steer is also trying hard to be cool...(and nearly pulls it off too !!) The staff were really good but the poor girl behind the bar had to serve everyone (yep, the entire resturant by herself with no help) Well, you can imagine what happened when i gave her an order for 4 cocktails..!! Yep, they took about 30 mins to arrive....Not once but every time...the manager was aware of what was goin on... and was all over it... but someone is missing out on a lot of revenue at this resturant..!
so, would i stay again.... Hmmmm... given that the hotel room was 340 bux... probably not !! - I recon there is better for the money... In fact ive stayed in better for less money... This place is competing with the best of them @ 340 bux - (remember that)
The locale in chapel street is ok if you dont wanna be / need to be right smack bang in the middle of Melbourne.
cheers

Thank you for taking the time to write such an informative review. Whether the feedback is negative, positive or mixed, we do appreciate knowing what our guests are saying. It is an old saying, but it really does help us to improve.

I would firstly like to apologise for the way your arrival was handled. I think you will notice from other reviews that our staff are generally praised for their work and willingness to help. However we have definitely let ourselves down on this occasion. I have spoken with each member of our front office team and really pushed how important the driveway service is to our guests. We believe that you should be able to relax as soon as you reach the entrance, and it is disappointing that you were not able to do this.

With regards to Steer Restaurant; I will pass on your feedback to the owner. Although the restaurant is within our building, it is operated separately to the hotel. I know that they appreciate receiving guest comments, so they can improve for future guests.

Finally, I can say that the rates were higher than normal for the period when you stayed. This was due to a large amount of demand for hotel rooms in Melbourne. In saying that; it is our responsibility to ensure we deliver value for money, regardless of the rates you are paying. The feedback you have provided us certainly helps, as we continue to try and improve and offer the best experience for travellers coming to Melbourne.

For travellers thinking of coming to The Olsen Hotel, I would encourage you to call our in-house reservations team, where we can recommend the best room for the best price available.

We stayed here recently for two nights. The room was great, the service was great and the facilities were awesome too.

The people who work here are friendly and helpful and willing to help.

This place strikes me as somewhere where alot of business people tend to stay so I was a bit concerned having our two young daughters with mus, however, I was wrong as the hotel warmly welcomed them and even gave them cute little painting canvases to do thier own artwork on.

The glass bottom pool was also a hit with them (how would it not be!) and given that alot of business people stayed here, the pool was so quiet all the time - it was great.

All in all - I think this will be our regular hotel when we visit Melbourne, only next time I might leave the kids behind and take better advantage of staying on Chapel Street!

Oh and PS.. the beds are amazingly comfortable - you wont be tossing and turning all night wishing you had stayed at home!

My partner and i stayed here for one night as a little treat away while going to see a show.
We booked a deluxe studio room with a balcony. To be fair i am going to split this into 2 reviews one for the hotel and one for the Bluebottle restaurant down stairs.

Hotel -
The hotel looks amazing from the street with the glass bottom pool visible.
The hotel is on Chaple st you need to walk a 1/4 block and you are right in with all the nice shops and cafe's there is lots of public transport around and the hotel has a number of transport options them selves from smart cars to scooters.

Upon arrival the staff were friendly and helpful. We went up to our room 1014 as soon as we opened the door it was like opening an oven door.. Soo hot . The sun was beaming through the windows and the surprisingly small room was unbearably hot. I must say i was very surprised how small the room was.. We have stayed in new york and london which is renowned for tiny hotel rooms and i hate to say it but they were def bigger than this although it was a lovely room just so very cramped ..

So we called reception Calium answered and was fantastic .. we questioned how much it would be to upgrade to a bigger room and mentioned how hot the room had been which apparently is an issue with some of the rooms . We were not wanting a free upgrade, we had y not realised the size of the room from the photos or description on the website. He mentioned that it was the presidents cup at the moment and that they were fully booked but since we had been disappointed with the room he would offer a complimentary upgrade...

WOW what an upgrade from our tiny 28sq to the 91sqs of the 2 bedroom open plan suite, excellent customer service. We were happy to pay for the upgrade so we were certainly not wanting anything for free but i guess its little things like this that will have me boasting about the hotel and coming back. Gorgeous room excellent lay out would be perfect for a family as well ..

There was no noise from the hall way , but the rooms are not well insulated from the voice from chapel st you can def hear the traffic and the occasional tram but nothing to bad but if your a light sleeper maybe ask for a room not facing the street.

The restaurant -

Short and sweet - Service was poor and slow which was surprisingly since the rest of the hotels service is amazing. The food - didn't make up for the poor service at all. Next time i would not bother with breakfast in the bluebottle restaurant. Very disappointing.

Finally - Would i stay here again , for sure but will make sure to book one of the larger rooms that did not receive the afternoon sun shine. The service was excellent in the hotel some of the best i have had. But think twice before going to the bluebottle.

Room Tip: I would think the east facing rooms would be least effected by the sun..

What a great find the Olsen was. Its tucked away from the mainstream on Clarke Street, but has tram stops outside with 2 choices of route into the centre of Melbourne. The Hotel itself is very quirky as it is totally themed on the works of Australian artist John Olsen http://www.timolsengallery.com/pages/johnolsen.php. His pictures are strangely enchanting and every room boasts several of his pictures as well as books and magazines on Mr Olsen. Our room wasn't particularly large, but was so well designed. Every inch of space was utilized carefully with the added bonus of sink, hotplate, fridge, and microwave. The clever bathroom was screened off from the rest of the room by a large engraved glass partition depicting more of John Olsen's work.
Our flight from Singapore arrived in Melbourne at 6:30am and we were pretty much jet lagged so were very pleased when the Olsen gave us immediate room access at 9:30am instead of their normal check in of 2pm. We spent 2 very enjoyable nights at the Olsen and would certainly recommend it for couples.
