“Only my second visit and awesomeness prevailed again!”
Reviewed 28 July 2013

I last visited the Olsen 3 years ago (I reviewed it then too) and loved it.
I needed to come to Melbourne recently for just one night to attend a conference and wondered if lightening could strike twice ... and it did!!
Check-in was super easy and low fuss, and I very quickly got to my room ready to crash after a long day of brain strain ... to find a beautiful hand written note with a little chocolatey gift on my bed to welcome me back. What a fantastic way to make someone feel great after a hard day : ) and after a visit once, three years ago.
Of course they had also opened an art book open at a fabulous piece of Mr Olsen art and the whole room was ready and waiting for me to relax.
These guys get that the little things are what differentiate you and strive to excel at them. This stood out against a major chain I spent the previous weekend at in Melbourne that over all is a beautiful building but my experience was I was just one of many guests and had multiple little things go wrong.
Chapel St is even better than I remember ... I would encourage you to have a chilled out weekend at the Olsen and then wander down Chapel St and eat and discover to your heart's content!

We wanted to stay at The Olsen because of the location on Chapel Street and the fact that we know John Olsen 's artwork. We also got a very good rate on a wotif mystery deal. We had high expectations and sadly we were very disappointed with the quality of the fit out. It was already showing wear and tear. The room was small, it felt like a shoebox, although it did have a west view towards the city. Our main disappointment came when we entered the room at 2 PM on Day One and the room was not serviced. We advised reception and then waited at the pool area playing chess with the hope that they would service the room, but at 4 PM the room was still not serviced. We reported it again to reception and they assured us that they would get it seen to, but no one ever came, and we left it at that. We helped ourselves to some dry towels from the pool area. We reminded reception again the next day. During our 4 night stay the sheets were never changed despite the fact that we had a coffee stain on the sheets. It would be appreciated if one could get a clean tea towel daily to dry the dishes. I would also expect the kitchen rubbish to be removed on a daily basis. The bathroom was not very clean. One could see mould in the shower. The quality of the white towels in the bathroom are not very good. They should be replaced before they get to that "grey" stage.
The positives: The reception staff were very friendly. The hotel has a fantastic location if you want to be on Chapel Street. There is a supermarket across the road. We appreciated the car park in the basement, which made it a lot easier with the handling of luggage. The room has a window that can be opened for fresh air. It is great to have a kitchenette in the room, although there are many restaurants in the area. George's (Masterchef Maestro) restaurant MamaBaba is within spitting distance of The Olsen. It is lovely to be surrounded by stunning artworks, although they are reproductions. The hotel has a cool vibe, if that is important to you.
I expect better service and maintenance from such a hotel and especially because it is called "The Olsen Hotel". I feel sad that the hotel does not reflect the same quality as John Olsen's artworks.

Room Tip: There are larger suites at higher prices. The suites facing west may be quieter than the ones facing...

The Olsen hotel was everything we expected and more. The staff were friendly and made an effort to talk to us about our stay. The rooms were beautiful and decorated wonderfully as you would expect for an Art Series Hotel. The views were incredible and the location was just off chapel street and in close proximity to food and shopping hotspots. We did decide to dine at the downstairs restaurant, Spoonbill, and were not disappointed. Amazing meals with great service. Small note however which of course is not the hotel's problem, the availability of Taxi's in the area is limited. Will definitely be back.

[The Olsen] hotel would like to thank you for leaving such a positive review which really sums up the hotel perfectly. The Olsen team are genuinely friendly and relaxed and we find that this definitely enhances ones experience and the John Olsen inspired decor certainly helps to ensure this. The North End of Chapel Street where we're conveniently located is ideal for all as you noticed. The abundance of eateries (including our own, Spoonbill!), shops, cafes and bars ensures everyone has an enjoyable time.
We will look forward to having you stay here with us in the near future.

I stayed at the Olsen for work and really enjoyed it. The whole vibe of the place is very cool. Great artwork, modern comfortable rooms, great bed, and quirky mini bar items. (I became quite obsessed with the little paint canvas set!). I ate at the Spoonbill for dinner and breakfast and the foot was really good. Looking forward to staying here again.

We are delighted to hear you had such a wonderful stay with us! The hotel aims to demonstrate John Olsen's personality all throughout the hotel. The murals in each room, paintings throughout the rooms and corridors and art books are just some of the ways in which we do this. Spoonbill is an excellent restaurant regardless of the time of day. Whether one wants a nice hot Saint Ali Coffee, some of John Olsen’s famous Paella or a delicious cocktail the restaurant is there to satisfy ones taste buds! We are looking forward to welcoming you back to [The Olsen].

My daughter & I arrived to be told that our room was upgraded to a penthouse. The room was spacious, clean, well appointed with a great view of the Melbourne skyline. We have stayed at The Blackman in the past which we have been happy with, The Olsen is now on our list of favourite places to stay in Melbourne.

Room Tip: We can highly recommend the Penthouse!!!

We were invited back after an unsatisfactory previous stay and usually I would of declined but a function presented itself in South Yarra so we gave The Olsen another go and it was worth it.
We checked in after 9pm on a wed evening.Check in was smooth and smiley, room was groovy clean and funky as expected. We discovered a complimentry bottle of wine and some absolutely delicious baked treats awaited us in a snack size noodle box which were scrumptious (and I was informed baked on premises my comps to the chef). This was a very thoughtful gesture including the customized note welcoming us back. I couldnt fault the staff or hotel. Absolutely ARTFILLED delightful little groovy gem tucked away in this part of Melbourne.IF you are an art lover you will appreciate this hotels VIBE and the effort that is harvested by its staff. Thank you Amy & staff for a delightful stay; we appreciate your hospitality. You wooed us and it worked! We will be back and will highly recommend your hotel.Cheers.

There is nothing more pleasing than to read how you appreciated the service provided by The Olsen Team and that you had such a memorable experience by choosing to return to us! We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the slices prepared by our in house chef, they are a treat! The art and the décor is certainly unique just as Dr John Olsen is as the entire hotel was inspired by his work and his individual personality. We are looking forward to welcoming you back again soon!

After being transferred back from New Zealand with business, I had the pleasure of staying at the Olsen on Chapel St, sth Yarra for the best part of 2 months in a Studio Deluxe apartment. The rooms were clean, reasonable size and price for a medium stay.

The location is excellent with plenty of shopping, restaurants, movie theater's and public transport right at the front door (trams out the front or train 1 block away which will take you into the city). The hotel restaurant creates a friendly/relaxing atmosphere with many travelers from around the globe for pleasure and business and prices are very good.

The most positive aspect of the Olsen is the friendly staff who are happy to help and for a medium termer, I was pleasantly greeted by a friendly smile and quick chat from Jacqui, Romy and Jarred who especially helped the hotel feel like home. Their engagement and ability to build rapport with guests was exceptional and really went out of their way to ask how your day was, ask how they can help or do something special to make help make your day. The Bar staff were Chatty with Dan especially knowing how to pour you a drink without ever having to ask. The Concierge (all the guys) were friendly and proactive to assist with anything I needed and especially taking care of my car.

I would highly recommend the Olsen - What a great place to stay - Shane
