This is a wonderfully informative piece of history and relevant to our modern times of course, great for the kids and big kids alike.

The ship is only open for tours on weekends but it is worth a visit. The "crew" (volunteers) were excellent answering all the questions our 7 and 9 year olds could throw at them. The ship is an integral part of our national naval and Maritime history. The kids had a fun time moving the guns around and exploring the boat. The pier also provides a very nice view of the city skyline and is surrounded by restaurants and coffee shops. It is well worth the admission price.

A comfortable ~ 1 hour cruise from Melbourne CBD led us to the Gem Pier and the Museum was just next to the boarding area. Staff were very friendly and many stuff were touchable, making the kids very excited. The most unexpected was the possible operation of the 4-inch gun with rotation and angle adjustment :-)

Exploring the Castlemaine is great fun but what makes this attraction great are the many volunteers who are very happy to tell the stories relating to this ship and lots more too!
