“Dont stay here”
Reviewed 20 April 2011

Four Star?? I dont think so. More like 2 star. Very noisy rooms. Doors slamming all night. People stamping around in the rooms above. Service is all over the place, some staff friendly, some rude, some arrogant and some that can barley speak English. Its a real dogs breakfast. Its cheap to stay here for a reason. Its old and noisy.

Room Tip: Dont stay here

Filthy hallways, dirty carpets, room falling apart, filthy greasy handprint on wall, mirrors falling off, paint peeling, no rubbish bin, no phone book, no ice cube tray, limited tv channels, fridge hidden behind door that wouldn't stay open, another cupboard cut off to allow for air conditioning ducts. Restuarant downstairs absolutely disgusting meal, overpriced, cold, raw and charged for it anyway....staff whilst polite didn't care. We were not the only ones complaining and would never stay again.

Room Tip: Don't stay here......

The bed was just 'double' size, so my husband's feet were hanging over the edge. When we spoke to the reception staff about this, the girls were really lovely but the manager didn't even have the courtesy to come out of his office to face us. The girls were obviously embarrassed having to go to and fro conveying to us what the manager had said. Anyway , there was nothing that could be done for us and we were doomed to have restless sleep having to be at a daylong conference during our stay. The staff in the restaurant were very nice also. The location of the hotel is very convenient, however, we will not be staying at The Grand Chancellor any more.

I booked this hotel through a travel agent after reading in a catalogue that it was a 4 star hotel with a swimming pool and gym right in the heart of Melbourne. The location was great but that was it! I booked an executive room and requested a Queen size bed. I recieved an email saying that this would be possible but when I arrived I found that I had been placed in a room with a double bed. There was no gym whatsoever. Apparently there used to be a gym four years ago... The pool was dirty and the whole place had a dated atmosphere. There were renovations underway that woke me up and there were views over a scummy carpark. The staff were nice but this (and the location) were the only good things about this hotel. It should be reviewed and made 3 stars.

I have read many of the previous reviews berating this hotel because it does not quite live up to its claimed four star status. OK some of the budget price rooms might not quite reach four star status and yes the rooms have an old style CRT TV (not an LCD). However on the positive side the check in staff were excellent and efficient, the buffet breakfast was very good and excellent value for money, the location is in the heart of Melbournes CBD-all this for AUD130 a night (twin) including the breakfast. If the need to stay in a luxury hotel is the most important part of your holiday this hotel is not for you. However if you want something that is reasonably priced with a good location, and it is not going to ruin your holiday because the room does not have the latest 32" LCD TV, then I would say this is the place for you.

I spent 2 nights at this hotel. As far as location goes, it is great.. and close to the theatres etc. We got our room (3rd floor no. 306) which was one of the refurbished rooms apparently. We originally booked a room for $99 and upgraded to this room for an extra $30 a night. We had a king bed, but it was pretty tired looking, even though it had been refurbished. The shower screen had been broken off and only half was there, leaving water all over the floor when showering. Also the tiles had been broken on the wall previously. When we left one morning we put the sign out for the room to be made up. We came back about 6pm to find the room had not been made up. We quickly rang reception and they said they would fix this up. We went to the theatre and returned at midnight and the room was clean and tidy. The staff were very accommodating and allowed us to leave our suitcases with them on the last day, and they arranged our hotel transfers to the skybus stn, so couldn't fault them. The weekend we were away, the Greek festival was nearly outside the hotel and the noise from the music was very loud. Luckily we were out most nights and only had to put up with it for an hour or so when we got home. There would have been no chance of an afternoon kip!! However, this isn't the hotels fault. We never ate there. The reception was very nice and also the restaurant and bar on the ground floor, but beyond the foyer the hotel needed a big revamp. I would not have liked another room if our was the upgraded one. All in all, I wouldn't stay here again.

The lobby was ok, the elevator was looking a teensie bit dilapidated. The hotel room was of average size. The furniture in the room looked like the type that a hoarder would pick up on the side of the road. This place is ok for a very short stay and provides you with a bed and bathroom, but you could get it much cheaper elsewhere. The balcony stunk like chinese food.
