“Underwhelming”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2014

We felt that we could expect a pretty high standard from a five star hotel in Melbourne but were very underwhelmed by the Sofitel.
When we were looking for accommodation in Melbourne, at short notice, for the weekend of the finals of the Australian Open, we knew it was going to cost us and, at an average of $500 per night, it did! We got upgraded from our standard room to a corner room which gave us two lovely vistas, including a view of hot air balloons floating past our window one morning, but that was probably the highlight.

The pros:

- The beds are incredibly comfortable,
Lavender spray on the pillow at night. This is exactly what I want at night, not some random chocolate!
- A nespresso machine. While not the world's best coffee (sorry George) we appreciated the effort.
- Lots of power points. Don't you want to charge everything when you arrive at a hotel and then struggle to find power points? These were right behind the desk and you didn't need to get on your hands and knees to find them.

The cons:
- Queuing up to check in. Sorry to sound precious but one person at check in is not acceptable for a five star hotel early evening.
- Ditto for the concierge. There were always lots of people milling around reception and not enough staff to assist.
- A shower above the bath, with a nasty rubber mat underneath. Need I say more

We will not be staying there again.

Room Tip: I couldn't say. The noise from the bar on the 35th floor reached us on the 48th due to the void...

Thank you for telling us about your experience at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins. I was very happy to read that you enjoyed your complimentary upgrade and the view that came with it. We are blessed with all rooms having fabulous views of Melbourne. I am also sorry you have experienced some lapse in service on our part and I sincerely apologise for the shortcomings. We are certainly eager to improve in these areas and are working on both to ensure we make the guest experience as pleasant as possible.
We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Service good, amenities good, view fantastic, food good. Rooms old and small though.

Also no pool or spa.

Rooms really feel like they are from the late 70's early 80's

We love staying at the Sofitel Melbourne. Have stayed at six other Sofitels around the world but this one in our home city is our favourite. The staff are always friendly and nothing seems too much trouble. The views from our room are always stunning and take on a magical quality after dark. The rooms are modern, very clean and quiet. The food at dinner at No 35 was excellent as was breakfast next morning and again the views are wonderful.

Had a problem with Le Club points this stay but after a few frustrating enquiries it ended well with help from David, the Front Office manager, We are very much looking forward to our next stay.

We had 3 nights in a Luxury room at the Sofitel. The room and hotel public areas are clean and high quality. The view from our corner room on 41st floor was excellent, especially at night. The included breakfast at No. 35 restaurant was one of the best with excellent service (from Alice in particular). Dinner at No. 35 is pricey, but you would expect it from this location.
Valet parking was very efficient.
The only complaint is the penny pinching with internet and credit card surcharge. At $400/night, this should be included. We travel a lot and 99% of hotels do not charge for this.

Room Tip: Corner rooms give great views

The last time I stayed here (early 2013) I wrote my review with excitement. Could not find a fault. As a consequence we joined ACCOR and had occasion to use our FREE certificate. We upgraded for $65 to a corner view room.
We paid in full at checkout with a standard $3.49 credit card charge added. (Visa outlawed hefty credit card charges in Australia in March 2013 - it appears Sofitel add this standard charge no matter the amount,)
Checking my Visa the next day I noted that, in addition to the checkout payment, Sofitel had added further charges of just under $100 to my Visa (including another $3.49, approx 4%, credit card charge fee). On inquiry, I was told this was a pre-authorisation fee which would be deducted in the next five days. If I faxed my banking details - NO!! - they would contact the bank to speed up the reimbursement. Not good enough Sofitel. Did you think because I was using my 'free night' I would skip town owing you the $65 upgrade?
I won't even mention the dark bathroom, awkward shower over the bath, or the fact that at first glance I thought the tub had a crack, only to discover it was a very long black hair. Yuck!
