A last minute booking for a cheeky little night away with my better half. What a lovely little place, great decor and you can see the old school opulence of the former Rolls Royce showroom. Bags of character and friendly, efficient staff. The room was lovely and the bed was comfy. Everything worked as it should and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. The buffet breakfast (included in our booking) was enjoyable too, lots of variety and helpful staff dotted around the restaurant. If you're looking for a place which is well served by public transport, also easy for taxi's and a short tram to the city, this place is ideal. Food & beverages are also well priced and served quickly.

Room Tip: Stayed on level 5 (room 502) facing the school. Nice and quiet and a well appointed room.

Before coming to this hotel I was a little worried because usually I stay at Crown or the Sofitel, both of which have amazing reviews! The reviews I had read of this hotel weren't all that pleasing, however after staying a night, I am wondering whether the hotel has changed dramatically since these reviews, whether I got lucky, or whether other reviewers have just been far too critical...

Check-in:
Fantastic! We arrived late - 7pm and walked straight to the desk where we were greeted with a friendly smile. We were told about our room and given drink vouchers. It was really difficult to hear the receptionist as there was a wedding party upstairs who had not yet been welcomed into their room, however the receptionist apologised for this and she was very polite - the noise didn't phase us at all. We didn't know where to find the lifts from reception however great guidance was offered. One reviewer spoke of the "mirror maze" in a negative light - I don't know how this is possible! The hotel looks modern and it certainly isn't hard to find the elevators, just walk straight and take a right!

The room:
We stayed in one of the basic rooms but it was anything but! The bed was unbelievably comfortable and the room was the same size as what you would find at crown or the sofitel, just without the price tag! The bathroom was great. There was no bath however the shower was large and water pressure was good. Amenities offered were standard and acceptable. All very clean. The rooms aren't as soundproof as what you would expect from most hotels however this didn't bother us - just a couple of people walking past every now and then and a um... couple next door ha ha. I suspect that if we had been staying in a room closer to reception that this would have been slightly more of a disruption.

Restaurant/Bar:
Also great!
We had our welcome drinks at the amberoom - it was okay, nothing special but nothing to complain about. A little bit of a strange atmosphere you could say.
One thing I must mention about Dish restaurant is the breakfast! It is one of the best buffets we have had in a while - so much choice and a great room looking on to st kilda road. For a boutique hotel I was surprised at how good it was, and even better, on Sunday morning breakfast went until 12pm which is unheard of usually! There's nothing like a sleep in AND still getting breakfast on a Sunday!

Service:
Everyone we came across was extremely friendly, everyone we walked past who was an employee said hello and asked us how we were. An absolute credit to all of you!

Checkout:
Probably the most people we saw the whole time we were there, however it was smooth and quick and they even held our bags for us for a while.

Location:
I am from Victoria so I know the Melbourne area quite well. If you want something walking distance to southbank etc then this probably isn't for you, however if you are looking for something with easy access (public transport) to most of Melbourne's attractions then look no further!

Overall I highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed here for one night on 11/06/14. Was expecting the worst given some of the reviews. Seems to be untrue as the staff were most obliging and very friendly. Was also given 2 free drink vouchers and complimentary breakfast for both my sister and I which was delicious. Room was nothing to complain about. Nice and spacious with a comfy bed. Ordered room service of a variety of cheeses and fruit salad which took 45 minutes to arrive which was not ideal but was happy with the quality of food once it came. All in all was a great experience, just a minor let down with the room service. Would gladly stay here again.

This place is not what it says it is. There are much better places around Melbourne at less the price and with properly trained staff and management that actually care and have a presence. This is just a money maker. Examples we experienced for our "special night" that wasn't.
Reception- smiles from staff, yes, but the booking fiasco - luckily we had copies of all arrangements that included breakfast being paid for. We asked about car parking, as others have said, this was a trick question it seemed, they advised we could leave it in the street or pay and they'd park it, heaven knows where, but we took that option. The staff were so busy chatting amongst themselves we thought the fact breakfast had been prepaid would be not passed on for morning staff so we clearly asked them to do so. We were given roomkey, 2 vouchers for free drinks (as part of our deal) and pointed to the general room direction. Could not believe this, and in a place where there is floor to ceiling mirrors and several corridors , think mirror maze!
Then down to bar for some pre show drinks, of course there's no table service. Drinks ordered, simple wine- Hand over the coupons for free drinks to be told they are for beer and soft drink, so we paid. Back for our free beers, same waitress, hand over coupon and no, that brand of beer isn't free! What rubbish. Recently stayed in Wangaratta, a country town who had the free drink coupons as so many places do, when handing it across they asked what we would like and specified what wines, beers, soft drinks it was valid for - up front.
Next morning breakfast was had. We gathered our bags and proceeded to checkout. Sure enough, there was the bill for breakfast added to our drinks. After much ado, they agreed with the documented receipts we provided. We were so dissatisfied that we completed the complaints slip that is left in rooms for guest comments and decided we would add to this and post it directly to the manager. Some months later, we have experienced the same as other reviewers here have- no response. With all the good places around who actually welcome guests and teach their staff the basics, do yourselves a favour and choose a better place. Maybe a drop in income at this place will make them lift their standard. I'd rather reward a place that deserves it and will never be back here. I've made sure to spread that to friends, family and any work colleagues travelling to Melbourne as well.

Room Tip: Any room that isn't in the Royce would be better!!

Stayed for a night at Royce Hotel. We usually stay at different hotels in Melbourne for a night every couple of months. We got a great deal on wotif.com which included breakfast. We were intending just a romantic night for hubby and me but our babysitting arrangements fell through at the last minute so we had to take our 8 year old along too. The staff were lovely and gave us at bigger room with a king size bed as well as including breakfast for our son at no extra charge! The hotel décor is lovely and the room was very clean, spacious, quiet and well equipped. Importantly, the bed was amazingly comfortable; one of the best we've slept on. Like all hotels in Australia, you have to pay for the internet which I find appalling. In the modern world free internet access should be a given. My son loved the free apples though. The staff were very polite and naturally friendly. We enjoyed our stay immensely and felt very relaxed after just a night. We really recommend Royce Hotel. For out of town visitors, it is easy to jump on a tram or walk into the city.

Stayed two nights on business and found this place to be excellent for my needs . The staff were fantastic with just the right mix of service and friendly helpfulness .
The hotel is older but very clean and the rooms i had were facing the Melbourne High School and had a balcony They were very quite and the location was handy to St Kilda with trams just outside the door. My room was comfortable and the bed was of good quality. For business this was a perfect choice as there was a good restaurant for breakfast and was close to a couple of good local eateries and i would say that it would suit a couple wanting a quite stay with a touch of old world romance as well .

Room Tip: Rooms facing the High school are the best get one with the balcony
