Ibis Styles Melbourne, The Victoria Hotel
Ranked #90 of 160 Hotels in Melbourne
Reviewed 12 August 2011

We have stayed here for a few years. It is one of the original hotels from the bygone era. The hotel is a wonderful but confusing mix of sloped corridors, lifts that don't really take you to your floor, so it is a little like a hansel and gretel theme where you need to drop some kind of locator device to help you find your room. The older part is basic, but has a really nice feel to it, whilst the newer rooms are modern and clean. The price is very reasonable for the centre of Melbourne, you are close to everything and it is easy to walk to Southbank. Vics Bar is just great, and the huge mezzanine area with the grand piano is again from a bygone era. If you are really lucky you may be privileged enough to hear an amazing lady play the grand piano. Reputed to be a once wealthy lady, rumor has it she opted to take up residence across the road from her grand home in a park and has been there ever since. ( if this is not true it is a good story, she is obviously very well educated and can play the piano so well it makes you cry ) She has an eclectic mix of friends that follow her as she plays the piano with the style and grace of a concert pianist. She can play anything from concertos to jazz and listeners sit spellbound as the gnarled old fingers make the piano come alive. She is very special and a pleasure to hear. I really recommend this hotel, it certainly is not perfect, and perhaps you need a bit of a sense of humor to stay here, but it is interesting. People who have complained have not spotted the quirkiness and sheer joy of staying in a place like this. I would stay here over a plush 5 star any day, give it a try, and not miss the amazing little alley ways close by, De Graves Street springs to mind.

Room Tip: Ask for the new rooms but the old rooms have character

Thank you very much for your feedback. I certainly enjoyed reading your comments as I am sure other users will. The hotel is going through some extensive renovations and we are happy to announce that over 60% of the hotel is now fully renovated. This includes brand new bathrooms, fittings, fixtures and furnishing as well as flat screen TV and ducted air conditioning. . These new rooms are called Heritage Rooms and are available to be booked now. The corridors are being updated as the rooms are being renovated but as we are sure you will understand, the building is 131 years old and we cannot change the layout too much. There are many a story regarding Miss Natalie and I don't know if we will ever know the true story. We are so glad you enjoyed her playing and like you said it is a pleasure to listen to. We thank you again for your feedback and we do hope to welcome you back again soon.

Hotel rooms have been renovated/modernised to a comfortable level. Breakfast was with package deal and was looked forward to each morning, nothing spectacular but it met everybodies needs for the day. Being in the heart of the city it was easy to access trams and easy walking to theatres,China town etc. Vic's Bar was a nice place to relax after a day sightseeing. It can become busy after an AFL game as supporters stop by to refresh and watch replays. When looking at Hotel video of bar staff making a cocktail and how nice it looked, I ordered a margharita and waited, waited, waited, staff did not have correct glass to serve in and as it ended up it was Shocker!!Sports Bar yes Cocktails NO.

Room Tip: Comfortable

Stayed here one night on a flying visit to Melbourne. Had a room on the 4th floor which wasn't too bad - it was one of the newly updated "Heritage Rooms". Layout of the hotel rooms is a bit confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it's ok.

Positives - It had a nice new bathroom with a great shower. The bed was comfy and it had feather pillows. Big TV with a couple of Foxtel channels (basic).

Negatives - once you went into the area which the Heritage Room are in (the non-smoking wing) it became really hot and stuffy. The air conditioner in the room didn't have any instructions, and although it seemed basic, even turned down to it's coolest setting (16 degrees) it still seemed to be blowing warm air after half an hour, so I turned it off and opened the window, which you could only open about 2-3 inches.

Frustrating - there are some renevations going on, so my attempt at an afternoon nap was non-existant with the banging and noise going on outside. The room and surrounding corridors also smelt of paint fumes, since it has obviously been recently painted, and because the windows don't open far it hadn't been aired properly.

Staff were friendly and helpful, and check-in and check-out were both quick and simple (I booked online and prepaid with Wotif.com).

For $150 a night I would have prefered to stay at a Holiday Inn or Rydges, but this was last minute and all that was avaliable. For $100 a night I would have said this was a Very Good hotel, but $150 is a little steep for the small room with air conditioning that didn't seem to work properly.

Minimal free toiletries provided, although I don't reccommend using the shampoo as it smells like dishwashing liquid!

Didn't get the chance to use the pool, but note that it's a PLUNGE pool, and not big enough to swim laps in by any means.

I spent some 18 days at the Victoria Hotel which I chose for its location and rates.

I very much enjoyed my stay there, my room was small but very clean and all was good.

Housekeeping was very good and friendly, and any requests were promptly met by the reception.

There is a business center, locker rooms, a small pool and and a gym at the hotel.

While the breakfast is not provided within the hotel, there is a restaurant next door (Thai) that also provides breakfast. Beyond this, there are also are plenty of breakfast options nearby in the city center.

Though I have lived in Asia for many years, the only thing is that I felt that if there is an external place for breakfast, lunch and dining, next door, an Australian type of cafe may indeed prove more popular at this location (Cafe Primo or similar).

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear you enjoyed to extra long stay at The Victoria Hotel. Alice's restaurant is in fact part of the hotel and is operated by the hotel for breakfast. As you mentioned Alice's Restaurant becomes a Thai restaurant for lunch and dinner and this is a leased to a seperate business during these times. We thank you again for your feedback and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

We booked here as we had function in the city. The hotel looked OK until we tried to find our room. It is like a maze on the upper floors and seriously took some searching to locate our room down no less than four corridors! The building is old, but not quaint or any feeling of history, just dingy away from the foyer area. The old part smelt of smokers...... Our room was average and that was it. Small bathroom, but modern and clean. No view other than birds and their muck. Breakfast had a good choice, but was barely warm. For the price it was a rather poor effort, however if location is your thing - then fantastic. Reception was pretty average really doing nothing more than checking us in and out. No one seemed to really care one way or another. Parking was convenient, but an extra charge which is typical of inner city.

Room Tip: We had a Heritage Room, which is classed as budget. It was adequate and quiet.

Thank you for your feedback. As I am sure you can appreciate with the hotel being 131 years old there are some features that cannot be changed and this includes the corridors that connect all four wings. As the hotel is undergoing renovations at present with over 60% of the rooms completly renovated this does also include the corridors which are also getting a facelift. Unfortunately being in such a central location, views are not something we have a lot of and with the ongoing pigeon problems in Melbourne there is only so much we can do when it comes to preventing the mess they make. We thank you again for your comments.
