We have stayed here for a few years. It is one of the original hotels from the bygone era. The hotel is a wonderful but confusing mix of sloped corridors, lifts that don't really take you to your floor, so it is a little like a hansel and gretel theme where you need to drop some kind of locator device to help you find your room. The older part is basic, but has a really nice feel to it, whilst the newer rooms are modern and clean. The price is very reasonable for the centre of Melbourne, you are close to everything and it is easy to walk to Southbank. Vics Bar is just great, and the huge mezzanine area with the grand piano is again from a bygone era. If you are really lucky you may be privileged enough to hear an amazing lady play the grand piano. Reputed to be a once wealthy lady, rumor has it she opted to take up residence across the road from her grand home in a park and has been there ever since. ( if this is not true it is a good story, she is obviously very well educated and can play the piano so well it makes you cry ) She has an eclectic mix of friends that follow her as she plays the piano with the style and grace of a concert pianist. She can play anything from concertos to jazz and listeners sit spellbound as the gnarled old fingers make the piano come alive. She is very special and a pleasure to hear. I really recommend this hotel, it certainly is not perfect, and perhaps you need a bit of a sense of humor to stay here, but it is interesting. People who have complained have not spotted the quirkiness and sheer joy of staying in a place like this. I would stay here over a plush 5 star any day, give it a try, and not miss the amazing little alley ways close by, De Graves Street springs to mind.
