“Okay if you don't mind tight spaces, slamming doors, and stifling heat.”
Reviewed 12 December 2009

Let's start with the positive. We were there for the Aussie Open tennis tournament, so the location was great for hopping on the metro and getting there. There were lots of restaurants and the trendy fashion district nearby. It's in a very cool old building, the staff was awesome and the desk manned 24 hours, and there was a large breakfast area. The were plenty of stalls in the shared bathrooms, and were clean enough (relatively speaking). Now the not so great. We had asked for a double room, which turned out to be bunk beds in a very, very small room with one chair, a desk and a tiny tv. The window opened up to the brick wall of another tall buildng, letting in about 4 feet worth of air to circulate the room. This was noticed because it was January in Melbourne and even though we weren't there during the heat wave, 30 degrees in that room was uncomfortable since no air/breeze got in through that tiny window. The fan only blew the hot air around. The next surprise was door slamming early in the morning. Although we later realized people weren't slamming their doors intentionally; rather the doors simply swing shut with a lot of force, and most of your neighbours won't realize this until you are startled awake at 5am. We had earplugs with us, and amazingly slept through the door slamming some nights. Overall, I'm not sure I would recommend this place...maybe when the temperature stays below 25, you are dead tired, and have absolutely no intention of staying in your room to do anything other than sleep?

I stayed at the Claremont Guest House while i was traveling around Australia. The rooms are comfortable and clean and breakfast is included with the room. Bathrooms were all ways clean. The staff are so kind and helpful. I will defiantly recomend this to anyone traveling to Melbourne on a budget.

I booked this hotel following the tripadvisor’s reports. It was the first time that it has driven me to choose the wrong place of accommodation. The room was the smallest I have ever stayed, I felt like a prisoner. The bathroom and toilet was sheared with many other rooms and was also dirty and old. The most disappointed of all was the location. Even throw its located near the South Yara train station its overall far away from the Melbourne center, where the majority of city’s attractions were. I had stayed in many hotels and hostels during my trip Australia and New Zealand honestly Claremont was the worst of all. Beware is a tourist trap!!!

Booked online and chose this hotel in South Yarra. It is near the train station, with shops, restaurants, bars nearby. The hotel is big but the rooms are tiny with shared shower / toilets along the corridor, none too clean either. Very old and run down feel but would of been Ok if the room had been better. Bunk beds, though how two fit in that room? small table, chair and shelf unit. The rooms in Melbourne jail were bigger ( must visit in Melbourne, the copper who locks you up takes it soooo serious, like your a real criminal, Yes Sergeant )

Claremot hostel was for us a continuing surprise by all means (bad surprise in fact). Really old building is very far away from the city center. It advertises that is close to a busy full of stores place and that's very untrue. Downtown is about 30 mins by train, which is luckily close to the hostel. The room is like a big elevator. There is hardly place for a big bed on which you put your backpack. There is no cupboard but some dexion shelves to put your staff. Walls are very thin and you hear everything happens in the hostel in any floor.
The parking is opposite the hostel and is hard to find out how it works. Finally, we abandonned our car because we couldn't find the parking places of vthe hostel (there are specefic places in a big parking).
Bathroom is old, filthy and a note that says "get civilized-try to save water" even though is eco and I'm in full agreement, sounded like mockery in there.
Breakfast was simple with cereals, orange juice and the worst coffee I've ever tasted.
Next time I'll be in Melbourne, if there is no other option I'd rather sleep below a tree...

This was recommended by a friend and we're still friends!
We were on a budget but didn't want dorm rooms - they have small rooms with a tv, table and clothes rack (hanging space and shelves). The room was clean and bright. The communal toilets and showers are just down the corridor and were clean (cleaned every day).
Reception and management staff were wonderful - very helpful and polite.
Breakfast is cereal, toast and tinned fruit, with tea/coffee/water provided free 24 hrs.
Off-street parking is available for a reasonable price for Melbourne, although the parking on street near the hotel is limited during the week (less restrictions on the weekend).
Great location - close to a lovely area of Melbourne with restaurants, shops, bars and the city (you can walk it from Flinders St if you're feeling fit) with public transport only a few hundred metres away.
We'd stay here again!

was a great location v. near the train station, which takes about 10 mintues to get into the CBD. Be prepared, our room was very small, but is fine if you do not intend to spend much time in it. A free basic breakfast was nice and staff are friendlly.

  • Liked — location, free breaky and cheapness
  • Disliked — v small room, couldnt swing a cat in it
