“Good Value for Southbank”
Reviewed 16 November 2013

Very reasonable price, for this area in Melbourne especially. Nice décor and the room was good, though the staff failed to clean one day. Was corrected immediately after a call to the management however. Lots of food and entertainment close by and only a few minutes walk across the river to the downtown, or the tennis venue.

Room Tip: book in advance

Husband & I recently stayed 1 week 01/11/13 till 08/11/13 to attend Melbourne cup carnival. The position of this hotel made our stay very enjoyable. The closeness to Flinders St Station, The City, Casino, and all beautiful eateries exceptional. The entrance to Eureka ( the tallest building) is right next door. The room we had (8th floor) was very quiet, clean, & comfortable. The staff we came in contact with were all very pleasant and helpful. We would stay again with no problems at all. Melbourne is an amazing place. All public transport now is with a Miki System which is simply obtained from a Seven11 store next door plus many other places. Makes life even easier for the traveler. Do yourself a favor and spend a week or more.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not have an adjoining room as friends had one and could hear a women talkin...

Very happy with the room comfy bed, nice linens, small but clean bathroom. On checkin we were offered either low or high floor. After previous reviews comments on noise opted for 10th floor noise not a problem. We got a great deal purchasing our room several weeks in advance even though we stayed during Melbourne Cup Carnival. The Southbank area was very busy but plenty of options for dining. Would not hesitate to stay again, pleasant, helpful staff.

My wife and I stayed at Travelodge Southbank in Melbourne for a week, arrived on the 24/11/2013 and left on the 31/11/2013.

Check in : - Fast and efficient, no problem at all. Well staffed, therefore when it gets busy - more people will present at the reception.

Room : - CLEAN and have everything one would expect from a mid-range hotel. Hotel toiletries, hair dryer, nice crisp towels, retractable single line cloth line for hanging things up across tiled shower area, extra pillow and wool blanket (in sealed bag - so won't get dusty). Black out curtain and an air conditioning unit which you can adjust the temperature. A small bar fridge, a set of dishes, cups and glasses and a noisy kettle. Flat screen TV with local - fairly good range and the usual pay per view channels. Daily room service.
We stayed in room 711 for the first three nights, but we found the bed mattress too soft, we asked the reception if we can swap to another room, the nice young lady at the reception suggested that she could move us to another room with a king size bed, where the bed mattress is firmer. We packed all the bags and she arranged to have all the bags taken up to room 1106, there we stay until we left. Slightly bigger room, same facility, and the bed is a king size bed with a firmer mattress. Nice.

Room view :- Our rooms were facing the yarra river, and we could just see a little of the river and we can certainly see the Flinders station from our room. Otherwise, we are looking at the back of the ExxonMobil office block.

Location :- Less than 10 minutes to get to the bottom of Elizabeth street and Flinders street. Leave the hotel, head towards the river, across the southbank footbridge, turn right and through a short under ground tunnel to get to Flinders street.
Our hotel is less than 50m away from Langham hotel, where we had the most wonderful seafood buffet dinner (see our sea food buffer - Melba Restaurant review). We are also right next to the Eureka tower - again less than 50m away.
To get to the art center (see our Sunday art market review), simple walk along the Southbank Promenade and walk up a flight of stair. Less than 15 minutes of walk. Watch out for jogger and cyclist on the Promenade.

Hotel facility :- They have guest laundry on level 3 and level 8, coin operated machine - I think it cost us $5 for the washing machine and $4 for a pack of laundry powder. It takes 45 minutes to do a machine load. Afterward you can hang up your jeans on the retractable cloth lines over the shower area (see above) to dry them. It took just over a day to dry them naturally, as the air cond did a remarkably good job in extracting moisture out of EVERYTHING.
Food and drinks vending machine in the lobby area - we didn't use it, but they look EXPENSIVE. Free wifi to hotel guest at the lobby area, limited to 15 minutes though. (see our Melbourne travel tips for best deal mobile data deal).

Check out :- Fast and efficient, no problem at all. Well staffed, therefore when it gets busy - more people will present at the reception. We left our bags at the reception while we went out to explore the city one last time, all pieces of luggage are given an identify tag, so no worry there of missing bag etc.

Upload pictures later.

Room Tip: I think the room facing the Riverside Quay could be quieter - though we haven't stay in rooms wh...

So close to Southbank and Crown Casino, about 200 metres from Flinders Street Station which can get you anywhere in Melbourne. The hotel was clean, the staff were friendly. The price was affordable, although they could have provided some kind of compensation for parking. Despite that, it was a comfortable stay, the blinds were exceptional in keeping the room pitch dark for sleeping in.

Stayed at the hotel last week and found reception people very obliging, and helpful when I needed to check our early because of illness, The rooms were clean and perfectly adequate with everything we needed for our stay except that, I was staggered by the fact that they wanted to charge a hefty fee for WiFi, especially as having just returned from Europe, where it is mostly free throughout a hotel including the bedrooms. A short walk up the road to the Information Centre at Federation Square, resolved this, where I sat happily using the WiFi there.

The Travelodge is a functional, no frills hotel, close to the CBD and Crowne Complex in Melbourne. I found the staff to be friendly, the room to be clean and functional. There is no mini-bar or breakfast in bed. However, it is great value in comparison to other hotels in the area. I did email upfront and ask for a quite room on one of the top floors. I was allocated a room on the 7th floor (of 12) and close to the lift, so this request was not totally fulfilled. However, I still found the room to be relatively quite and the noise from the lift didn't bother me too much.
If I wanted to stay in Melbourne again, on a budget, I would most likely book here again
