Owner description: Melbourne’s iconic Princess Theatre is regarded by many as Melbourne’s most spectacular landmark. Dating back as far as 1854, the theatre was purchased by Marriner Theatres in 1986 and plans were immediately put in place for its total refurbishment to ensure its future viability as a live theatre venue. The Princess Theatre reopened in 1989 with the musical ‘Les Miserables’ followed by ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ which established a new record for the longest-running show ever staged in Victoria. Today, it continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions.

“Legally Blonde”

Legally Blonde is a wonderful musical for all the family..it's such a shame it's closing early. My average rating relates to the Princess Theatre itself not the show. The seats are very uncomfortable. They are low to the ground. There is not enough room between rows for latecomers to get to their seats without disturbing people already seated. You have to stand up which I don't mind but even then it's a struggle for people to get through.

“12 months of MAMMA MIA, the musical, shown here!!!”
Reviewed 27 June 2013

Good:
-Australian productions are of international standards.
-The seating chart of this theatre is both intimate & yet Circle seats have a great view of the stage.
-Stalls seats for major musical theatre productions presented in this theatre,
are priced cheaper than their Broadway counterparts.

Bad:
-In-house-cafe is expensive.

“Nice theatre but small seats”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

Princess theatre is another lovely theatre in Melbourne CBD l have visited often. Being positioned on Spring St it is on the edge of the city but still walkable distance from Swanston St or the Crown Casino if you don't have any leg problems - its slightly uphill walk. You could get a tram up Bourke St then turn left and walk the short distance or even catch a train to Parliament Station which is practically on the doorstep.
The Theatre is a lovely old building which has a narrow foyer so quite crowded. Toilets are plentiful and modern but as with all theatres there is usually a queue and long line. We always have dinner in the city before a show so l make sure l use the toilets before leaving the restaurant so l don't have that wait in line.
This theatre has very small seats so l can't see how people with very large bodies could be comfortable in them. The seats are the older style which flip up when you stand and the backrest moves forward. There is also very little leg room with my hubby's knees almost touching the seat in front. If anyone wants to get by everyone must stand up and squash themselves back into their seat space and if a bigger person wants to walk past the row behind then you are likely to get a bump in the head. These seats however l found are still comfortable to sit on (l am an average build) for a couple of hours.
We were last there in May 2013 to see Legally Blonde when it was a cold and wet night outside. We found there was a constant cool breeze chilling us while waiting for the show to start but we didnt notice it once the doors were closed so l assume it was coming through the doors which came directly off the foyer.
The view of the stage is usually very good however there are a few seats which have a poor view. Booster cushions are provided for children who need more height to see the stage.
There is a small stall which sells snack foods and drinks - a bottle of water is the normal theatre price of $5.
There are many restaurants in nearby Chinatown for a pre-dinner meal - if you inform them what time you want to be out by for a show most will endeavour to have your meal over in plenty of time. Theres also a bar or 2 just up the street along with other restaurants and eateries.
Wheelchair access as only one step off the street into the foyer. Also has stairs for upper level, unsure about an elevator to get to upper viewing level.
Prices for shows vary depending on the show, day and time of the session.
