“Great location, great apartments”
Reviewed 1 January 2013

The location was great - right on the main street and close to Flinders station. The apartments were very clean and well equipped. Except for a few small points (the washing machines didn't work, the remote control didn't have a cover, a couple of glasses were broken in the cupboard) the only real issue we had was the internet was slow. All in all though, good value for the money.

Somerset is as always very well located downtown. But this is the only advantage there. I have been used to much better at Somerset in other cities. First the furnitures of our 2 bedrooms appartment were very basic. Then the rooms were very small, although the beds were good. View was blocked by a big wall. Bathrooms were far to be well equiped (ridiculous small and single sink, very few and poor amenities). Lights are very white (cheap bulbs) and aircon not individual. Bedight in one bedroom did not work. Look also at the lift which looks like from the 70's, well refurbished but don't expect the doors to open when they meet an obstacle. At least the staff was nice. When you consider the high price you pay for this, you should better find another place.
Still we had good time there as we had our Xmas in this hotel with our kids...

Love this location which is within walking distance to all shopping malls and if you have the mood to walk further, you can reach Crowne Casino. Lovely staff who are always ready to help. Car Park is pretty limited and is not exactly attached to the hotel - it is closed after 10pm so be watchful over that. Rooms are decent and clean. I will stay here again when I next visit Melbourne.

The hotel is in a good location. Close to Melborune Central and Bourke street mall. Building going on next door but had no issues. Room was comfortable and spacious. Staff were friendly and helpful. Not a bad place to stay for a girls weekend afterall most of the time we were out shopping.

The location of this apartment is excellent, it's next to the shopping belt of Melbourne, tram stops and many eateries and convenient shops. However, the apartment itself is a bit run-down and old. The road noise and loud music from nearby clubs can be heard if staying at the low floor.

The Somerset is located right in middle of the places you might want to visit on a trip to Melbourne CBD - there is Hardware Lane around the corner, full of great restaurants and cafes, and plently of shopping nearby with multiple large shopping complexes surrounding the hotel.

One thing to be weary of - if your room is on the side of the hotel facing the street, be prepared for sleepless nights because of the amout of road/street noise you will be able to hear. Similarly, I was awoken on both nights of my two-night stay by crashing and banging noises in the middle of the night coming from inside the hotel. You can literally hear everything that goes on in the hallway outside your room.

I didn't try the breakfast as there are plently of other local options nearby. Service was pleasant enough and they reponded to requests fairly quickly and without any hassles.

Overall, I would probably choose somewhere else as I value a good night's sleep.

It was only a short stay but value for money was very good in the 1br apartment I was in.

Spacious rooms with the bedroom placed in the room furthest from the lift. Blinds that closed completely (believe it or not this is something that many places just don't get right!).
Spotless room, lots of towels (not too keen on the soap dispenser in the shower), well lit and comfy bed with pillows that weren't too high.

The ironing board in the room was broken however a brand spanking new one was delivered within 5 minutes of calling down - with a follow up call to check if it had arrived and all was ok! Wanted a shower cap but there wasn't one. I guess if I had called down they would have sent somethign up but overall the amenities were sparse. This is pretty common in longer term stay places so not really unexpected.

Very central in the CBD however the Elizabeth Street facing rooms could probably get a little noisy withthe trams combined witht he current roadworks (not that I experienced this).
Bedrooms were unique as you could open the windows for fresh air which is something one tends to miss when cooped up in a hotel!

Service was friendly and accomodating and security was good.

Overall a very good solid apartment hotel for the short time I was there. Would stay again without hesitation.
