“Elizabeth Hostel review”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

I arrived here in March and stayed here for 3 months. Considering this is one of the cheapest hostels in Melbourne it is decent value for what you pay for. Overall this is a decent hostel, the staff are very friendly, good atmosphere for backpackers, the hostel also has foxtel with movie and sport channels and there is also free wifi. It has a decent sized kitchen with 4 cookers and has a smoking room where you can go to have a cigarette and the rooms are cleaned just about every day

If you're not a backpacker I wouldn't stay here as it can get quite noisy at times. The shower facilities are alright but the toilet facilities are average at best, there are no hand dryers to dry your hands. I stayed in an 8 dorm room there are some nights where I didn't get much sleep but that depends on people in your room. Personally ive had a bad experience in that I've had a few things stolen from me in this hostel .

Overall though it's decent prices for the facilities that you have and it's got a great city location as there's a big shopping central just 5 mins walking distance. If I came back to a Melbourne I would definitely come back here.

I would recommend to a friend :)

After reading bad reviews I was a little worried. However, I was very happy with my 4 night stay. Despite the very thin walls, most of the guests were very quiet and considerate. The place was nice and WIFI was useful.
I would definitely stay here again, great location.

Only problems were the uncomfortable beds and the shower temperature was a nuisance (but that is expected of a cheap hostel).

Room Tip: Book a private room, only $30 a night.

I was a bit nervous staying at this place due to the reviews, but I think there must have been a change of management (?) as the room was spotless when I arrived (and yes I've checked under the bed as well). I've also noticed the share bathrooms are cleaned even at night - they were spotless during the day and when I woke up the next day. It's the closest hostel you can get to Queen Victoria Market, and pretty much everything is walking distance from here (even from the Sky bus station). My only gripe is that the walls are not that sound proof, but then again I haven't really stayed at a youth hostel that wasn't noisy. The receptionist was pretty friendly as well - recommended a couple of good eats to start off my food tour around Melbourne :)

Room Tip: Best to call them and book over the phone - they have an online booking system through another websi...

Wow, where to begin?

The staff are incredibly rude and don't seem to care about the residents at all.

It's VERY noisy if you are unlucky enough to have a room facing Elizabeth Street. Groups of other backpackers there have taken to partying all hours on the footpath with their booze and stereo. When I brought this up with the staff they basically said 'tough -- put up with it or leave'.

It's quieter during the day, but not by much with the high-rise building going up next door.

WORST accommodation and attitude of any kind I have ever experienced. I'd give it zero stars if I could. The location is good but these scum-bags don't deserve any credit whatsoever.

Avoid this place at all costs!!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else - seriously.

I slept there three nights, and the bed was so small, I had to throw the mattress in the floor.

After three days I put the mattress and bed back together and a hyperdermic needle and spoon fell out on the floor!!!!

Totally freaked-out now, I called the desk person in who seemed nonplussed.

I said I'm not touching that and I would like a refund or at least a partial.

He said and I quote: "We do not give out refunds in cases such as these."

I asked what the "dirty needle in the bed" policy was and then asked if that doesn't warrant a refund, what does?!!!

He said, "We do not give refunds."

It was a hot couple of days outside but the hostel has very few windows and heats up to be far hotter inside than out. The dorm rooms with tiny windows in some become ovens, over heating from the combined body heat of the guests.

The guests in all the rooms I saw are disgusting, rubbish, clothes, empty beer bottles and used plates all over the floors. The rooms stink of body odor and rubbish.

To be fair, the hostel beds are comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped. The showers are good, the bathrooms horrible. If it were not for the guests I would give it a 3, but every room was treated like a town dump, the kitchen tables constantly a mess. As a result, the place had a terrible odor and the lack of air conditioning in the rooms made for a horrible experience.

Average hostel because of the location. We stayed one week in double room. Clean room, good TV, movies to watch, but is not very clean. They tried to clean, but the guests were very strange and messy. Not the same people we met in other hostels: students who come to Australia to work and have fun. The people here is more the working class people. Difficult to sleep because of the sound of doors slamming, the people coming and talking loudly. Extremely noisy and unclean. We had no problems but if you are fussy about cleaning try some other place. In-room refrigerator - thanks God because the kitchen was filthy. The toilets are an horror show. Specially the ladies. The place does not appear to be safe.
Free wi-fi worked for us. Good location near the Market and City Tourist Shuttle bus stop.
We payed US$ 57 for a double room with shared bathroom.

Room Tip: Try to stay away from the floor with the washing machines in the corridor.
