Really enjoyed the NGV. Great free exhibitions. Paid $10 to see the Australia Modern furniture exhibition and it was worth it – comprehensive and interesting. Next time, I'll split my viewing over two visits to get the most out of it!

Located at the back of Federation Square, its not the most prominent spot for an art museum. If you're pushing a pram or in wheel chair, its best to enter via the ground level cafe/food court area off Flinders St. The permanent collection is free and this is where you'll find the classic Australian artists such as McCubbin, Streeton and Roberts. Think "Shearing of the rams", "Lost", "The Pioneers". My art loving 5 yo wanted to go visit and see the big Australian oil paintings so this was where we found them. Something cultural to do with kids when you're in the city and want to minimise entrance fees.

Set in the modern Federation Square complex, this is the National Gallery of Victoria's Australian collection. NGV International is the other side of the river on St Kilda Road. Here you will find three floors devoted to Australian artists. There is a regular program of temporary exhibitions and gallery talks, most are free. The Aboriginal works on the ground floor are particularly impressive. It is a culture so often hidden, here you will gain a bit of insight into the way they view the world. Some of the staff are quite moody and get agitated if you are even slightly too close to the art. No photography is allowed inside.

Didn't expect finding the interior that interesting but it was. Didn't know it was free either but the guide on the free Fed Square tour recommended to me to go. At the moment there's an exhibition with sculputures by Inge King which is very impressive. However, I was fascinated the most the exhibition about the indigenous art, it's stunning and beautiful. Really worth having a look at.

We really enjoyed the David McDiarmid exhibition on gay culture and art in Australia. It's running till Aug 31 so do check it out. No photography or videoing permitted though.
