“Beautiful building in the centre of Melbourne”
Review of St. Francis Church

We simply love the architecture of this old church. Went inside and was very impressed with everything about it. They had hourly services on the Sunday we were there. we went back on the Monday when it was a lot quieter but there were still people there deep in contemplation, so beautiful to see their faces deep in prayer and meditation, came out of there, feeling totally refreshed.. a lovely change from shopping in Melbourne!

Attended 8am Trinity Sunday mass at St Francis' Church. The priest gave the most articulate, and concise homily I've ever heard. It was good to see other holiday makers in the congregation. After the service I entered the Ladye Chapel (see attached photo). Next door to the Church is the Catholic Shop.

Is that a spelling mistake on the sign (see attached photo)?

I have just been to the Holy Thursday evening Mass for which the church was jam packed including many standees. It was a prayerful occasion with the talented St Francis' Choir and excellent organist adding much to the Celbration of (Christ's) last Supper.

The Ladye Chapel is indeed a beautiful place to pray.

It was a young congregation, full of Asian students who study in Melbourne but whose families live in Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan and mainland China. Such a gathering brings home to me the universality of the Catholic Church. To be in one of Melbourne's first buildings of any significance adds to the occasion.

I have visited this church over many years. Historically, this is Melbourne's first Catholic cathedral. It has been a popular for many years for city workers to come to Mass or just to pop in to pray. The Ladye chapel is just stunning aesthetically. It provides a haven and a place to light a prayer candle. There is also a bookshop on the Londsdale St side.

St Francis' Catholic Church is Georgian in style and dates from around 1843.

It lacks the high roof spaces of St Patrick's Cathedral outside Melbourne's CBD, but St Francis' Church is much loved by Victoria's one million Catholics, as the Blessed Sacrament Fathers who say Masses have a special emphasis on the Catholic sacraments. They are experts at finishing Masses quickly at lunchtime for office workers.

This church is richly carpeted in red. It has cosy side pews for those who light a candle and pray. Some of the faithful are always on their knees.

It hosts yearly Masses for the start of the legal year and racing seasons, and also caters for Melbourne's rapidly growing Filipino community on some Sunday afternoons.

The St Francis' Choir sings at many 1100 Masses on Sunday: this lengthens the Mass somewhat, so if you are in a hurry to do other things that morning, you may wish to attend at another Mass time.

A Catholic Bookshop is next door to the church and trades seven days a week.
