“Wise pick in an expensive city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2014

Hotels and service apartments tend to be really expensive in Melbourne but Alto is a good middle ground. It's a small hotel, but it offers bang for your buck. Good-sized rooms, very clean, amazing beds, central location (tram stop and train station next door) but not noisy, friendly service. They didn't have a porter so when I arrived I had to wrestle with my bags up the stairs and they had just one elevator, but that's just nitpicking. Those in the front desk were always willing to suggest good places to see. All in all, a great stay.

Very convenient hotel for the centre of Melbourne, great service, well appointed rooms, very clean and competetively priced. One couldn't ask for more. Certainly made a note that this will be preferred hotel if staying in Melbourne again.

Staying at the Alto is always a great choice, the beds are awesome so comfy and warm. Breakfast is always top rate and the service in all department fantastic. Always stay there if there is a room available. Price is great also.

The Alto has a real green initiative, which was great to see. It's about time there was a hotel that gave you a recycle bin as well as a normal rubbish bin. The soap/shampoo/conditioner dispensers in the shower are a great idea (instead of the little bottles), except ours wasn't working properly. The room was small but very nice and clean, with a great little work area and good WiFi service. The bathroom is small, and the shower doors were more like a Dr Who type contraption which made the shower small even for me. Bed was very comfortable with great pillows - one of the best night's sleep I've had when not at home. The public areas are small but very nice (let's say cosy) - especially the library area, which I wish I could have spent more time in. The staff were friendly during our stay, although our card didn't work coming into the building late one night, which was a bit of a hassle but fortunately there was someone there to let us in. We were staying during the film festival, so the location wasn't as close to the festival areas and shopping centres as we would have liked, as we were travelling by foot (you might prefer it if you're using public transport). A nice little hotel at a good price, with green initiatives.

The Alto is well positioned and whilst the rooms are not overly large, they are comfortable and the service is very good. They could have a mini bar set up, but do not have. The breakfast menu is fine and the service is excellent. If you are looking for a clean, well serviced and very well priced central hotel than this will be hard to beat

Room Tip: Stay toward sthe back

Firstly I have to say this Hotel would be the perfect gem if it ticked the welcome box. Unfortunately for my family, it did not. For us, as paying customers we expect good friendly customer service, and we did not receive this from reception staff at the Alto. Not so much as an enjoy your stay or hope you enjoyed your stay or I don't know, a smile! The hotel was well appointed, cosy and clean. Great location near good lane way cafés and restaurants. Excellent tram and train access. I don't usually gripe on here and having travelled overseas and interstate often, there aren't too many places I can say let us down with unfriendly staff, but this did taint my view on this hotel.
Take this tip Alto, friendly staff goes along way!

Room Tip: Stayed in room 410. Lovely 2 bedroom apartment. Was a little loud with construction occurring daily...

AltoMelbourne, General Manager at Alto Hotel on Bourke, responded to this review, 25 June 2014
We appreciate the time taken to provide the review on Alto Hotel. It is nice to read that the hotel is a gem however we have failed on the important item of friendly service. From the comments I take it that our guest service team were not rude, however they were not overtly outgoing. We have reviewed available information regarding the contact with various staff throughout the stay so that we can identify where we can be better in this regard.

From the information gathered it seems we have been efficient or even per-functionary rather than gregarious or extroverted. We have used this feedback to recalibrate our interactions and to remind ourselves that while we may feel we have performed well it is imperative to ensure that every single interaction is to a level rightly expected by our guests.

We took the three bedroom loft apartment and stayed for four nights before we began our road trip to the outskirts of Melbourne. I applaud the hotel for its green initiatives, they do not skimp but provides the basics such as toiletries in large dispensers and an option to change towels daily, if we wanted to. Entire apartment was well lit, clean and well equipped. Very quiet surroundings and convenient to walk to nearby places and the train station for food and groceries. The complementary wifi was great - reliable and does not require multiple logins each time you return to your room. The Alto reminds me of the quaint hotels in Italy, with fresh and delicious meals prepared, small but functional lobby and restaurant. Hotel provides free apples which was a nice touch. Staff were professional and helpful. Only gripe was the car park is a block away and unsheltered. But we will still come back to the Alto for our future stays, nothing comes close to the comfort the Aalto had provided to our family of six!
