Another fabulous stay at Cairo, very well located close to The Royal Exhibition Building, close to good cafes, food, supermarkets. Great spot!

“An Incredibly Convenient Oasis”
Reviewed 31 May 2015 for a stay in May 2015

After our home was flooded, we needed to find suitable medium term accommodation for us and our two dogs - and this is where we ended staying for nearly five months!

The managing agent was incredibly helpful - they made themselves available on the weekends to show us around and then went to some additional trouble to ensure that the property was doggie-escape-proof after an unexpected dog-break-out. A welcome pack of goodies on arrival and an available-all-hours concierge service supported the full service approach.

The property itself consists of two dwellings - something not immediately obvious from the pictures, but that would work to give two couples travelling together close to full privacy, but with the ability to share the lounge/dining rooms. The courtyard adjoins both of the dwellings and has a charming outdoor area that is complimented with a BBQ and was lovely during the warm/long summer evenings.

The primary dwelling contains three bedrooms, all of which are upstairs. The master bedroom has a very small ensuite toilet/shower and has huge windows that let in the light. The other bedrooms are of a good size, although we didn't use them other than for storage and there is a large family bathroom also on the top floor.

On the ground floor is the kitchen/dining area and the lounge room, along with a toilet and a European laundry hidden behind some folding doors. Both the dining room and the lounge room have very large windows that are on the boundary of where the property meets the footpath, so while the owners have gone to some trouble to provide privacy blinds that give a sense of separation, the conversation of people walking past while you are watching TV (or eating dinner) can be intrusive.

The studio apartment (accessible across the courtyard) is self-contained with its own kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom. There is some minor overlook from the apartment above the studio into the lounge room of the main dwelling (again, the owners have thoughtfully provided blinds), but the rest of the property has been carefully constructed to avoid this - a difficult achievement given its very-inner-city-location.

And the location is what makes this property so special: the Carlton Gardens are literally steps away, as is the Melbourne Museum ... and the dining delights of Gertrude St & Brunswick St are not much further. You are spoiled for entertainment choice with Smith St not much further away.

The city itself is within a very easy walking distance - it is less than a 10min stroll to the free tram-zone so free city transport is easily available. The beautiful Melbourne Exhibition Buildings are also very close by (next door to the museum) and we found that dining in Lygon St was also a very comfortable walk.

There is off-street under cover parking available should you bring a car, a rarity in Fitzroy ... and the owner has supplied an street parking permit that would cover a second car or allow guests to stay for longer than the restricted parking allows.

Inside the property has been tastefully decorated throughout - the kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans and other cooking utensils while the lounge room and master bedroom have reverse cycle air-conditioning installed (absolutely necessary during the summer months). The lounge room also has a sophisticated entertainment setup (large screen TV, Pay-TV subscription, surround sound music system etc) and Internet connectivity was included.

The property recommends itself to those who wish to stay on the city fringe and avail themselves of all the delights that Melbourne has to offer. With everything within such an easy walking distance it is a place that we were happy to stay in and recommend to others.

Liked best: The location was exceptional - very difficult to fault as it is so perfectly situated
Liked least: The sidewalk being directly outside the lounge room - if you're not used to this, it can be a little disconcerting

Hi Gary, David

It was a real pleasure to have you stay with us (given the unfortunate circumstance of your home flooding). Please think of us again if you choose to vacate anywhere where we have homes :-) We'd love to see you again!
