My family have been regulars here for a few years and just love the food because there are some great dishes you won't find at many other Japanese restaurants. We never have main meals, choosing instead from a selection of the delicious entrees and often leaving it up to Toshi, the owner to surprise us. He is very welcoming and remembers your favourites. The staff are attentive and very polite. Do yourself a favour and try it.

Akita was a favorite Japanese restaurant when I used to live in Melbourne, two years it hasn't changed. Great food, friendly service and charming host Mr Toshi. Patrons at Akita are more like relatives to Toshi! Non pretentious ambience but fresh and yummy food.

This restaurant has been under the same ownership / management for 30+ years. That, alone, should speak volumes! Open Mon - Fri only.
We always get Toshi (the owner / maitre d') to just bring us entrees of what is good / special on the day. We have never been disappointed. We love seafood but our guests sometimes do not and they are always pleased with what is brought to them. The food is fresh, interesting and varied. The service is attentive but not invasive. This restaurant is not expensive but is really good. As a benefit - it is only a short walk from a tram route

Have been eating at Akita for years and I don't think anything has changed. Why would anyone want to change one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne? The food here is excellent. The special entree menu is where we always start. Sharing these entrees is a great way to begin the evening's dining. The toothfish is a highlight!! We always have it. The lamb salad is not your normal Japanese fare but what a delight. The crabmeat in a crepe, the beef tataki, the John Dory wrapped in shiso leaf and lightly battered etc never fail to delight. The sashimi/sushi is always fresh and tasty providing a wide variety of fish. The nabeyaki udon, sukiyaki and shabu shabu amongst others continue the very high standard of food. The fact that this restaurant is BYO wine as well as licensed (wines well priced here if don't BYO) helps keep costs down. What a pity Akita is not open at the weekend.

Always look forward to Akita on a Friday night, a great way to finish the week. Changing daily specials provide variety as well as favourite dishes such as beef sukiyaki and ebi tempura which are always on the menu. It is a good restaurant for sharing dishes with the sashimi , akita rolls and toothfish (when available) a standout. Service is prompt and friendly , they anticipate your needs and make sure the customers have a memorable experience.
