Always full of people that clearly appreciate quality Sechuan food at a reasonable price (for Melbourne).

Ive been to the one in South Yarra on Toorak Rd with my family for lunch... A definite must. It's not fancy but the food is outstanding and the service is expeditious!

We will definitely be back.

Very very crowded on Friday night when we visited - fortinately we booked so went straight past the queue to our table.

Decor is just up from the 1980-90's laminated tables with waiters & wiateresses straight from China - this led to some minor communication challenges but there was an attentive senior waiter able to translate questions to the less experienced English speakers doing the waiting. Menu holds a variety of dishes with much hotness typical of the sichuan food direct out of china. A number of dishes are cooked with lots of small dried chilli!

The duck was pretty plain and served cold - not that this was a major problem but it was not specified on the menu.

There is a continual flow of patrons making the place really hum. Many are Chinese in origin and a number of family groups were dining - always a good sign! We sat upstairs which I think would have been quieter thaan the downstairs dining area.

Worth a look but best to book.

Like many other reviewers, I found out about this on Bourdain's show. It's renamed but clearly the food is the same - super authentic. Not just hot, but tongue-numbing in the true Sichuan peppercorn way. We ordered a mon-spicy veg dish for the kids, and I was impressed at the fresh bamboo shoots, and perfect degree to which the dish was cooked. The chicken wok was soooo good, despite its bland name.

Arriving early was gave us a lucky break, we could observe some of the etiquette of the hot pot experience of this restaurant. I recommend the double broth option, so you get non-chilli broth in the middle and the chilli broth around the outside. I love chilli and wow this place cooks with chilli abandon! The waiter recommended the mild option and this was excellent advice. We chose from an extensive range of items which you cook yourself and many dipping sauces. Deserving of special mention are the coriander pork balls and the pork dumplings. The aromas were beautiful, loads of noise and activity, people standing to make toasts for birthdays, the energy was infectious! There is no wine so if you want to drink wine pick some up from one of the many wine shops nearby. It cost AU$25 per head for the 6 of us. A truly memorable experience, food and fun wise.

Although lacking in "atmosphere" this was a great authentic Chinese meal ( however ,having said that it reminded us so much of meals eaten in remote, rural China so brought back happy memories ) Obviously ,by the look of the Asian clientele they think it is like home too, so that is always a great recommendation. Obviously, not a restaurant to linger over your meal as is v. noisy & the service quite perfunctory but efficient - in fact almost too quick as if they wanted you in & out quickly to enable the queue which stretched out the door onto the road to get in. Was so nice to have the thinly sliced potato's that I haven't been able to enjoy since last trip to China on the menu. Chilli hot but definitely not unpalatable - not sure that we got offered the fullmenu as a lot of our Asian neighbours seemed to have a steamboat on their tables which we were not offered. Cheap & cheerful with plentiful flavour - bookings a must if you dont want to stand on the footpath !! Will return.
