One of the best Japanese meals we have eaten.
We arrived on a Sunday night before a public holiday... we were told they were fully booked from 830 so we had an hr to hurry up and eat... perfect we like to eat and get out as we aren't sitters... food came out very very fast. we couldn't keep up.... only disappointing thing was the restaurant emptied out around 8pm and customers coming in without bookings were seated... bit of a shame seeing as tho we had to be out for a full restaurant.
Entrées were to die for, scallops in a mushroom sauce =amazing
popcorn prawn bites = amazing
sliced raw beef = amazing.
Everything else was perfect. little pricey... BUT...want good food? expect to pay :)
we will be back in no time and will ensure we book a table so we can enjoy the meal without being hurried out the door.

Stumbled across this place after arriving late in Melbourne and it was close to our hotel. So glad we did. Unfortunately we weren't overly hungry so we only shared the pork gyoza for an entree and the chicken teriyaki for the main. Soooo good.

We really wanted to come back to try some other options when we were hungrier but unfortunately time got the better of us.

My only small critique would be the edamame beans. I love edamame but they served them cold. I always get them, and in a restaurant I have always had them served warm. Didn't like them cold.

Other than that, couldn't fault anything. Service was fantastic and they really looked after us, even though they were close to closing. Would certainly recommend this place.

We had a group of 6 at Ishiya, and only 2 people had ever been there before.

My son and I had taken advantage of viewing the menu online and had decided on our choice before we arrived.

The restaurant is small but not to the point of being over crowded.

The service was very good and the menu was explained to us and how the stone grill works.

There was quite a large selection of wines but most of them were by the bottle with a limited number by the glass, and the bottle prices were a little above what I expected.

Anyway the son and I chose the tasting plate for 2. I think there was a bit of a missunderstanding because we ended up with a tasting plate for 2 each. It didn't matter because we were hungry and the tasing plate selection was delicious.

Then our rib eye steaks arrived. Initial thought was they were over cooked but when we started to cut into them they were still rare/raw inside. This was fantastic as then we could cut off a slice and place it on the stone to continue the cooking exactly as we wanted it. The stone I feel served this purpose and also kept the steak hot to the end of the meal.

We also had ordered a side of broccolini and mushroom and fried rice. All the meals come withvery few vegitables and as we like out vegies it was a good thing we had ordered the additional sides.

Others had the seafood selections and this was delivered for example as a plate of scollops and prawns for them to cook to their liking.

Everyone was very happy with their meals, and price wise drinks, entrees and mains around $60 per head.

Due to the popularity is is advisable to book ahead.
We will always keep Ishiya in mind the next time we visit Melbourne.

Tried this restaurant without knowing what it was and without having ready any reviews of the place.
The room is quite small but nice and you don't feel as if you are squeezed in. Service was very kind and good with good explanations.
Had the steak on stone and I must admit the quality of the meat was very very good - all the food we had was well made and tasty.
Can recommend.
