My friends and I go to Shanghai Village regularly. It's the cheapest and tastiest food in Chinatown! Not to be missed.

My husband and I ate a late Saturday lunch and a Wednesday night dinner here several weeks ago. Both times the food was delicious and the place was full with people waiting. Delicious dumplings, wonderful vegetables, food is served hot and fresh. Low prices. Cash only. BYOB – wine, beer, liquor can be purchased a few doors away. Not much in the way of personalized service, but staff is pleasant and works very hard. Lots of activity and great for people watching. Come here at least once if you visit Melbourne.

Cheap and dirty dumplings are an institution in Melbourne. This is one of those occasions where Trip Advisor will lead you totally astray. Despite its standing as 900-and-something on the list of restaurants in this city, if you leave without eating at Shanghai Village Dumplings or its direct rival, Shanghai Dumpling House, you are missing out on an experience that the locals repeat time and time again.

I'm not saying the food here is good, though I've never had a complaint. In fact, the service is adequate but never good, the restaurant itself is outdated and a little grimy, and your chopsticks are plastic and tacky. But the huge restaurant is noisy, lively and full to bursting, and there's a queue out the door into the street for people wanting more.

Why? It's hard to say. It might be the fact that you can bring your own wine or beer into this CBD restaurant (and conveniently, there's a bottle store down Little Bourke St to facilitate this). It might be that you can score a plate of fried vegetable dumplings for an hilariously low price. It might be the deep fried pumpkin bites, which are little hot balls of sweet heaven.

Whatever it is, it's a rollicking good time, particularly for the 35s and under, who are out for something cheap, hot and sociable. Go for the dinner shift and experience Melbourne's ghetto dining at its finest.

Was brought here by work colleagues and was a little taken aback by the poor decor etc... However when the food came out it was very clear that this restaurant is all about the dumplings. There was a large group of us and we sampled a large range of dishes, most of which were very tasty indeed and very inexpensive.

Never before has a waiter put a new dish down on our food on the table rather than move the dish being eaten. The worst service ever experienced by me. Erratic. The vegetarian food was interesting but the chicken and prawn dishes varied only in the meat but not in flavor. No return visits for me to repeat an awful experience.
