“Nice location, not so nice management.”

Port Smith is surrounded by beautiful beaches, great swimming spots, awesome fishing... But the over strict management left a sour taste in our mouths. The 10am check out meant that, even though we had vacated our site, we were no longer welcome on the property or beaches. Didn't leave much to say for our overnight stay. :(

We stayed here in July 2012 in our 2WD motorhome. There's 100 caravan sites here, plus cabins and a camping area. The location is approximately 160 kms South of Broome.
We found the Park to be very shady, but dusty, because it's lacking adequate grassed areas. Fuel (diesel and ULP), bottled LP gas refills, and kayak hire are readily available here.
There's a small shop in the Park, selling basic household items, bait, and fishing tackle.
The owners are competent and businesslike, possibly a little brusque for some people.
The water supply is adequate, of reasonably good drinking quality, and comes from a local bore.
The ablutions are clean, very spacious and well-maintained. Each shower is a normal room size, very generous by anyones standards. Hot water is adequate, but the water pressure is very poor.
The beach is not readily accessible, as one has to traverse the lagoon to reach the actual beach. This has to be done at low tide only, and a 4WD is necessary.
The tides are massive here, around 9 metres between high and low tides, and the water fairly rushes in and out of the lagoon.
Because of the proximity of the mangroves, the sandflies are out in force. If you're allergic to sandfly bites, you're best advised to avoid the mangrove and high tide areas.
The unsealed entrance/access road is poorly constructed and is basically a big drain, being much lower than the surrounding country. The road surface is somewhat rough, but can be traversed by 2WD's with care and at modest speed (60kmh).
It's approximately 23kms from the Highway to the Park entrance. As a result of the poor entrance road construction, if it has rained recently, you will find water pooling on the road surface, and access to 2WD's may be restricted.
This is a pleasant stopover on the trek between Broome and Port Hedland, or for an extended holiday break.
The area is noted for its good fishing, and the park is usually full of fishing people.
There are a substantial number of long-term (3+ months) residents here. There's no Internet or mobile phone service available at this location.
A 4WD is fairly necessary to see all the local attractions, and to reach the ocean front, unless you like a lot of walking.

We have just had 2 nights at this great location. The staff were so friendly and helpful on our arrival and whenever we popped into the well stocked shop. Large shady sites, with the best amenities we have encountered since travelling across Australia for the last month. Had an amazing Thursday night Fish and Chip meal, plus local Bidyadanga band. They served up the best fish and chips we have had on our trip and to the 200 other guests. No one went hungry with 2nds and even 3rds available. The lagoon is lovely and great safe place to explore and catch fish.
A must on your itinerary and well worth the 22km unsealed road out to it. Broome could learn a lot from places like this.

My wife and I stayed at Port Smith for three nights in early July 2012. What a pleasant surprise it was, beautiful day time temperatures and cool nights provided a perfect camping experience. With oversized shady caravan and camp sites in abundance it's no wonder people have been going there for years. The fishing is superb, whether from a boat or from the shore, there's a place to suit all anglers. If collecting sea shells is your preferred form of relaxation, look no further than the Port Smith region. A short drive to the north is "Gourdon Bay" and to the south there is "Little Creek", "False Cape" and "False Creek". All of these areas provide great shell collecting opportunities with a myriad of different specimens to choose from. Needless to say, these areas are also fantastic fishing spots with many fine fish waiting to be caught. The caravan park has spotlessly clean bathroom facilities with large ensuites featuring great hot showers if you get in early enough.
Sunday morning is pancake time, just bring a plate and Thursday night is fish and chip night. The staff are more than friendly and provide all the information you require for a rewarding fishing holiday etc. We will be back for sure, and we will have our boat and snorkelling gear with us next time. This is one of the best locations I have ever stayed at and I have been fishing and camping for over forty years around Australia. It's not comercialised like some of the big caravan parks, it's got a 60's feel about it, friendly and laid back with fine hospitality.

We spent one night here during the wet season. The dirt road of around 20kms from the highway to the park was flooded in parts although we easily got through with our 4wd. When we arrived we found that we were the only people in the park. We stayed in an ensuite cabin. It was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. The park is very tidy and it has lots of kangaroos, lizards and frogs wandering around. The staff were very friendly and helpful, they took time to show us the best fishing and crabbing spots in the lagoon. We spent all afternoon in the lagoon on low tide fishing, we had it all to ourselves. The sand flies were fierce but some Bushman's spray did the trick. We look forward to returning during the dry season to make the most of this beautiful location.

We stayed at Port Smith after being in Broome. It was an clean and friendly caravan park with a cool lagoon 2 min drive away. Crab hooks are available for free hire from reception. The ablutions were extremely clean and the roo's would lie on the empty camp sites ( the joeys were too cute!) . Manager had orphan joeys that the kids could pat but don't pat the wild ones which are just wondering around.
The only problem was the mozzies ,horse flies, etc... If staying at port smith cover up in long clothes or put on a heap of bug spray!
Great place for those who don't react to bites!
12 year old daughter got covered in bites and counted over 60 of them!!!

Beautiful, shady park, all red dirt, which is to be expected in the North West of Western Australia. Full power except for unpowered tenting areas (these are grassed). Great facilities provided, including the best and cleanest ablution blocks I have ever had the pleasure of using. Sump point and power nearby, large level sites, some drive thru. Good laundry facilities provided. Very good on site accommodation at reasonable prices.

600 meters away, the gorgeous Port Smith Lagoon awaits for people who want to swim, fish or chase mud crabs.

Thursday night "Fish & Chip Night" for small fee, all money going to RFD (live entertainment provided). Also boat trip across the lagoon to fish or picnic for a gold coin donation (also for RFD).

All trees and shrubs, which are considerable, are fed by drip feed or sprinkler irrigation and the park is kept very tidy by friendly staff. Our stay which was for 6 weeks from 1st August, 2011, was very enjoyable and charges were $33.00 per day with 1 day out of every 7 free.

The only possible downside is the low water pressure although the water is very nice to drink, and the threat of sandfly bites. Don't let these pesky guys stop you, just dress appropriately at dawn and dusk and use plenty of sunscreen during the day.

Highly recommended.
