This hotel had only been open three weeks when we stayed there and it showed. Check in was easy although they said the retention to my credit card ($400) would remain in place for 30 days after I left just in case they found anything extra to charge to me.

The room was as described, very nice and clean although the bathroom door did not close properly, the room safe did not work and neither did the internet point - all issues which should have been found when the room was snagged before handover and was reported to reception by me and ignored by the Hotel.

Although the room came with an electric kettle, there is no way to fill it since it would not fit into the gap between the sink and the tap! You have to decant water into it using a glass. The room came with a complete set of plates, tea towel, washing up liquid, a fridge, toaster etc (as do most Australian apartment hotel rooms) but there is no where to wash up the dirty dishes other than the bathroom sink which then clogs up.

Housekeeping was very poor, parts of the room carpet were never vacuumed, parts of the bathroom were left uncleaned the whole time we were there and the timing of room cleaning was very erratic. The room had a DVD player but you are assumed to bring your own DVDs with you – most hotels have a guest library.

Charges for the internet are ridiculous, either 55c per minute of $10 for two continuous hours plus an additional charge per Mb. They were so high that a member of the hotel staff advised me to use a centre in town rather than pay the hotel charge. When I found that the Internet point did not work in my room, my first call to “24 Hour Internet Service Support” was left unanswered and although my call was important to them, it was not returned. After a second attempt, the support person agreed with my diagnosis of the problem and its possible rectification, said he would tell the hotel to do it but nothing happened. It was left to me (as a guest) to work out a way of using the internet (in spite of the high charges).

Food in the hotel is at typical prices but the quality is currently average to poor. I heard one guest telling someone outside of the hotel that for the first time in her life, she had to send back a meal as inedible. The Restaurant staff are very nice but under trained and quality is poorly supervised.

Parts of the hotel are not yet finished – one of the two swimming pools and some rooms and some elements of the structure still have the builders in as does a section of the grounds. Work on completing these is not over disruptive to guests.

I suspect that it will be a nice hotel when it is finished and has settled down but it is a poor reflection of the quality standards they say they seek to achieve. I wonder what how they perform elsewhere in the world.

Despite the above, I enjoyed my stay at the hotel. The comfort was welcome after a number of months on the road. I would be willing to try them again but only if I felt that they had got themselves sorted out.

We booked this apartment (and I am really fussy, and do not want any worse than I have at home) so a brand new place appealed. I was worried when the opening kept gettting delayed, but it was almost finished by the opening in July (second pool and a few apartments still not finished).
The pool is beautiful, although a little cold; the food at the restaurant was good, although the service is pretty atrocious, and reception staff, for the most part, were good. We had a problem with a leaking toilet, and was not fixed while we were there as a new one had to be sent from Perth. We met people staying at Captains by the Bay, and this place is even better, but more expensive, and comes with a car.
The Oaks is perfect for families, and well priced compared to Cable Beach Resort for 2 bedroom apartment. We had friends stay there 3 months ago, and they said it was worn out, tired, and nothing worked as it should, but the location is great.
I would stay at the Oaks again, and have no problems recommending it to others. If I was prepared to pay more, I would stay at Captains though (just around the corner opposite Matso's Brewery).
