Owner description: Perth's favourite playground, the Swan River is a stunning waterway which winds its way from the Darling Scarp to Fremantle. This natural attraction is popular location for Perth locals and visitors to enjoy a day out boating, fishing, skiing, paddling, swimming, picnicking or simply enjoying its vista.Rich in environmental and cultural values, the Swan River was named Derbal Yerrigan by the local Aboriginals who believe that the river was created by the rainbow serpent ‘Waugal’, a dreamtime spirit taking the form of a giant snake. It is believed that the Waugal created creeks, waterholes, lakes and valleys on its journey to the ocean.

The river is so nice, wide, calm and our trip to Rottnest Island from Barrack Street Jetty was memorable.

“The river that makes Perth what it is!”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

The decision to place the city of Perth at its location on the Swan River showed magnificent foresight by the early settlers all those years ago! Winding up through some of the most expensive and exclusive suburbs of the city from Fremantle it provides a serene and beautiful backdrop to the city.

I quite often walk from the Causeway around to South Perth via the Narrows Bridge and catch the ferry back to the city. On other occasions I will do the whole loop around commonly called, suprisingly enough, "around the bridges"! A distance of about 9.4kms. Coffee shops, restaurants and shops are available in both Perth and South Perth if you need a "refuelling" stop along the way.

If there is one thing that the Swan River lacks then that is a regular public ferry service. Apart from a service between Perth and South Perth and various commercial ferry services there is nothing else. To see the fantastic pubic ferry service in Brisbane (who's river is nowhere near as nice as the Swan - sorry a bit parochial!) would give an idea what could be done in Perth.

“Walk along the river bank.”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Take the free CAT bus to Victoria Gardens & begin the picturesque walk taking in the boats frerrying tourists around & different types of birds waddling in the water. One can walk upto the Harrison Island causeway or all the way upto the Bell Tower & then take the free CAT bus back to your starting point.

“Great Cruise down the swan river”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

We took a ferry all the way down swan ferry to Fremantle. Extremely relaxing cruise with calm waters and good commentary from the captain. Would recommend taking a cruise down to Fremantle through the Swan River.

“Cleanest River in WA”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

The Swan River is an amazing river right at the foot of Perth. Hire a surf cat from South of Perth or catch a River Cruise all the way to Fremantle from Perth Port. The Swan is the playground of all who visit this part of WA. Walk down Barrack Street and enjoy a breakfast at Perth Port on the Swan, visit the Bell Tower and then head up-river on a wine cruise boat to the Swan valley for an amazing wine experience.Whether you head down river to Fremantle and all that is on offer at this fishing boat city or sail up-river past the Casino and to the wineries, be sure to make time to spend on the Swan River.
