“Always tasty and fresh”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

I've been here a few times for weekday lunch or dinner, dine in and takeaway. All dishes I've tried have been very tasty and good value. The only criticism is that dishes seem to be prepared differently each time, and one of my favorites was dropped from a menu change.

“Not Vietnamese, barely Asian”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We love Vietnamese noodles. Having tried many noodle stalls in Ho Chi Min, we have certain expectation of Vietnamese food.

Unfortunately the food in this restaurant was well below our expectation, both in terms of its authenticity and taste. The soup from the beef noodles tasted like plain water with salt, and almost no other spices. Authentic Vietnamese noodles should also come with plenty of green vegetables. But we had almost no vegetables in our noodles.

They also serve Tom Yam soup, Mee Goreng etc (obviously these aren't Vietnamese). We ordered a serving of Tom Yam noodles and it turned out better than their beef noodles !

“Will return to this one!”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We found this great restaurant when walking past. We enjoy Vietnamese food and went back again as the food was excellent as was the service. I would recommend booking, although the staff go out of their way to get you a table. The meals were tasty and certainly of a high quality. The range of dishes is very good with you being able to choose different ingredients to make the wok dishes. The small soup was not as small as we thought :-) there is a cocktails list along with the wine and other drinks list. As we try a Toblerone cocktail when it is on the list we thought we would try one here. We were not disappointed, it was the best Toblerone we have had in WA. We will return to this restaurant on our next trip to Perth.

“Hidden gem, good food, great view, close to Concert Hall”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

I probably wouldn't have known about this if I hadn't looked for a parking spot on Terrace Road before a concert at the Concert Hall. I have 2 other 'usual places' on Adelaide & St George's.

Southern Star's menu may be shorter/more compact than one expects from a Vietnamese Restaurant and there are things I expect to see that haven't made it to the menu, but it has a section where one can essentially 'design your own dish' which appeals and especially works for parties of more than two. Food is made to be shared in such restaurants and fish eaters are catered for. VPFD (vegetarian-piscean?!-fellow-diner) likes this place but probably has fewer choices here than we have had at other places. Most recently dined on tofu & vegetables in a cashew & chili sauce, vegetarian pad Thai. We each got a cup of rice ... would suggest they adopt a practice of other restaurants that serve rice in insulated or covered containers ... or maybe dish out the rice as diners need more. Ensures rice stays nice and hot.

When we were there for an early Sat dinner (1745H) before a 1930H WA Symphony Orchestra performance, there were already a number of tables occupied and a few visits before, one of the diners was carrying a case for a large stringed instrument. True!

A few more vegetarian options will ensure that more tastes and diners are catered for.

Look for this, only a few metres from the corner of Victoria Avenue. Parking can be a challenge but there are often bays across the street, if not right out the door. Concert goers may wish to look this up.

“Good Vietnamese”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

I ate here with my family in March 2014.

I am not overly fami, iar with Vietnamese cuisine but decided to eat here based on the other reviews on TA and we were not disapointed.

The restaurant is in a nice location and inside it's spacious, modern and clean. The service was friendly and polite throughout the meal despite one of my elderly family members being rather trying to say the least!

The food was great and the servings were huge - we ended up taking about one third of all the dishes home with us so almost two meals for the price of one!
