“Quaint little hotel with great rooms and fantastic breakfast!”
Reviewed 11 December 2009

I have been told that Miss Mauds Swedish Hotel is an institution and 'got to visit' place in Perth. Now I know why. It is a quaint, Swedish themed hotel and just great all around for value, comfort, accommodation, service, location and breakfast. Having obtained a business rate including the famous buffet breakfast included in the accommodation, this place cannot be highly recommended enough. If you visit, you must have the breakfast in the restaurant with absolutely everything you can imagine on offer. We also had a lovely dinner in the restaurant however if you are after a quiet secluded and romantic place, this is not for you - lots of families with kids and an accordion and piano playing duo who got louder and louder but its all part of the charm! You will love this place and the service and friendly staff.

The Swedish theme makes this hotel rather unique. The location in the middle of downtown is very convenient with lots of places nearby, including a supermarket. However, everything shuts down about 6:00 PM so there are much fewer options for a late dinner - mostly restaurants in hotels, including this one. The airport shuttle bus picks up across the street, as does the extremely useful free Red Cat local bus service.

The room was small but adequate. (I had a single, some rooms may be more than described here.) However there wasn't much drawer space, just what was in the desk. The closet space was small because of the mini-bar refrigerator. The fridge also made a bit of noise, but not too annoying. I could also hear a bit of noise from other rooms, but it was muffled and not an impediment to sleep. The building does have quite a lot of stairs. There is an elevator (very slow) but even that requires a few stairs for access!

The bathroom was small but satisfactory. Good shower with satisfactory temperature and pressure, but very sensitive to the controls. However there are no wash cloths (a British descended thing) and the towels were very scratchy. I realize hotels use towels heavily and they won't be like what one has at home - but these were really far worse than I've had in any other hotel.

The highlight is the included breakfast. Served in the adjacent restaurant this was the probably the best breakfast buffet I've ever had. Various hot items such as sausage, round bacon (what in the US is called Canadian) eggs, pancakes, french toast. Plus rolls and danish, cold cereal, fruit. Of course various juices and tea and coffee. By having such a good breakfast you don't need much for lunch.

Took the dearest out for our Anniversary and decided on the Miss Maud special Treat for Two, buffet dinner for 2, room and buffet breakfast for for $229. This hotel is located in the middle of Perth, close to the shopping, cinemas and restaurants.

The desk staff happily changed our dinner booking when we said we were going to be late and were pleasant enough to deal with, which was only check in and out.

The room was smaller than expected, but not cramped. The usual very high standards in presentation were only let down by the dirty towel from a previous guest hanging on the bathroom door, a rare slip here. Kingsize bed was comfortable, good pillows etc. Big TV, fridge, some minibar services. Parking cost us $25 for 1 night across the road in the multilevel carpark. Be aware some building works are in progress next door, it didn't bother us though.

I rate the buffet dinner highly for quality and value. Seafood, roast, vegetables, soups, cold meats and salads, most people would find something to enjoy. But save room for the dessert selection too! Dinner can be popular and reservations are recommended. The waitstaff were efficient and helpful and we didn't have to wait long for service. The breakfast buffet is also a treat and is included in room prices.

Terrible piped music throughout the hotel or was it just my room? my complaint was met with a cheesy grin from the manager.
Average food expensive prices, try else where.

Stayed for one night as a Treat for Two deal which gave us a queen size superior room with smorgasbord dinner and breakfast included.
Liked
The smorgasbord dinner and breakfast plentiful (you can eat yourself silly) but the food was just ok.
The hotel is located in the city centre within short walking distance of the main shopping malls.
The hotel room was very well presented.Towels and sheets were immaculate and fresh, bathroom was shiny and spotless...
Staff very pleasant and helpful.

Disliked
Booked for a queen size superior room, but our room had 2 single beds which where hard and not very comfortable.
Room 231 is very very small
Could hear people in the next room talking early hours of the morning
Disliked the music thats was been playing during the dinner time in the resturant it was just to old fashion and plain right boring.

My Personal Thoughts:
Good value for what it offers!!! Miss Maud's has a high end rating on this site I can understand why some reviewers may be disappointed, but one need to realise that the key is value for money, not luxury for free. So if your looking for high end 4-5 star hotel maybe you should really steer clear of Miss Mauds, no matter what the price!!!

Miss Maud's hotel in the Perth CBD is great value because of its central location just along from the mall, its quality accommodation and the excellent buffet breakfast. The Fawlty Towers type up and down stairways to the rooms are not an issue unless you have a mobility problem. The room was serviced daily, had a very large flat screen TV and piped music which completely masked any city traffic noise. We had a very restful stay there. The buffet breakfast is quite extensive with the usual cereals, fruit, pancakes, bacon and eggs, muffins and pastries and also some nice cheese options. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone.

I loved this hotel. Great location in downtown Perth, with friendly service. Has a old world charm. The lift is old style with doors you have to manually open and close. The hotel and room walls are covered in some lovely wallpaper. The room has a flat screen TV, piped music (which I thought was refreshing), though the room is a little small. Breakfast wasn't as impressive as suggested by previous reviews, but the fact that it was included in the room price is good value. Walking distance to the train station and shopping. Parking is free if you park at some designated public parking lots which is about 5-10 minutes walk. Alternativley paid parking is just opposite the hotel. Internet is rather reasonable at AUD5 per hour.
