Reviewed 21 October 2012

this hotel looks like a butlins or prisoner cell block H, it is really clean with comfortable beds and is in a great location, it's staff are very friendly too, but the look is off putting, but if you just need a couple of nights cheap accommodation in Perth, this hotel ain't to bad. Hi De Hi campers.

Room Tip: all rooms from the outside look identical

To preface this review I have to say that obtaining accommodation in Perth is pretty difficult. There is a shortage of hotels and most hotels are either overbooked, or charge huge rates. After trying to find 2 rooms for a one week booking for Sept 2012 in April 2012, I found this establishment the only place that had availability in my price range (or so I thought). I booked the two rooms for the standard flat rate.

When I arrived at the hotel, the first thing that alarmed me was the surly reception staff (whom was the wife of the husband/manager). The next thing were the state of the rooms. The rooms are dingy, dated, and in some areas dirty. The bathroom, in particular, was growing mould in a few places (some behind the toilet, other patches of mould in the shower area). The taps in the other bathroom made loud screeching noises whenever they were on. The kitchen area was recently updated, but I noticed food debris near the fridge recesses and in the new gas stove.

The television had digital television, which was ok, but the reception was usually poor and the station would cut out a few times every minute. My traveling colleague required a stable internet connection to do some work for a conference, and she was unable to use the fairly expensive internet provided through the hotel so she needed my 3G network access which is limited and considerably more expensive. When my colleague complained to the manager's wife, she admitted the internet was like that, and to fix it you had to repeatedly click on "Repair Internet Connection" in Windows.

The beds were very uncomfortable, with ugly patterned sheets (are they used to minimise the staining?), and of upmost importance were very itchy. I hardly got any sleep as the extremely flat pillows provided no support.

When we brought these issues up to the manager,as we found much more suitable accommodation for a bit more (but included a buffet breakfast, evening canapes, and afternoon tea + free WiFi), his response was "well that must be difficult for you" in a really dismissive and hostile manner. To top it off, they were refusing to allow us to leave early and charge us for the 7 nights stating plainly "NO REFUNDS." We eventually were allowed to leave but had to pay for another night's stay even though we were leaving that morning.

I may have high expectations, but a 3 star establishment does not mean it is dirty, has appalling service, and inoperable advertised facilities. Overall this was a very disappointing place to stay with the management's bad attitude topping it all off.

Room Tip: Just don't stay here, and pay a bit more. It actually is cheaper to find a place that provides...

As usual, we chose this by looking for cheap rates for the period we wanted where there were no damning (and preferably some positive!) reviews, and with a location that looked suitable on a map.

Perth has a reputation for being expensive, so we were happy to find accommodation at $135 per night. We didn't need parking but there was some first-come-first-served (probably enough for about 1/3 of the units).

It was a self-catered unit; kitchen equipment was sufficient if we had wanted to cook for ourselves (gas range plus microwave). Coffee/tea supplies and toilet paper were replenished, beds made and towels changed. There was a bath with an over-bath shower; the shower head was quite low and the space to shower quite narrow. Soap was provided, but no shampoo.

I note at least one review criticising the bed and bedding, but we found the bed perfect and the pillows sufficient too.

The location is technically just outside the CBD in East Perth, but it's still pretty accessible. One of the free city bus circuits runs very close by, Barrack St Jetty is not far, and the edge of the main retail area is an easy walk. The entertainment precinct of Northbridge is a little further, say 25-30 minutes.

We would stay here again. While you might think of being 'further in', everything in and near the CBD is spread thinly along the north bank of the Swan River, so you're going to have to walk or use transport wherever you stay.

Room Tip: Three floors, no lift, so if you have trouble with stairs ask for a ground floor room. Units open i...

Firstly, Perth is expensive for accommodation and unless you are on business expenses or have a high budget I think the price I paid for City Waters was excellent value for money.

The property is simple and pretty basic but is centrally located and very clean. The staff are very pleasant and always willing to help.

I think some of the reviews are a little harsh as I sometimes wonder why people book low priced accommodation and expect five star luxury, personally, the Apartments had everything I needed, the bed was one of the comfiest I have slept in, the kitchen was well stocked, and the bathroom clean. There is a laundry and it is so close to the CBD that you can walk, or if you are not into walking, 5 minutes and you can take the free Perth bus.

There is wifi, AU$10 per day or AU$50 per week which is a little pricey, I did avail of it for a day but it wasn't particularly fast and kept dropping out, I think I was just too far away from the router so I can't really blame the hotel for that.

I would happily stay here again and totally recommend it.

stayed here for a week in May and found this place very basic and dated. We were quite taken aback when we arrived and saw how dark and dreary the apartments are, it reminded us of a 1960's block of council flats that have never been upgraded. We asked to move across to the block opposite just so we could get a little more sunlight in the room. On the plus side the location is very good, just across the road from the Swan river and a short walk to the CBD and the reception staff are very friendly. Not a cheap option , but nothing in Perth is.The Having said that we made the most of a bad lot and had a nice stay. would we recommend city waters for a stay? only if you want basic accommodation and are on a tight budget.

Room Tip: get a room on the top floor and check which side gets the most sunlight

In a city full of average standard, over-priced hotels it can be a struggle to find something that gives a modicum of value for money.

City Waters is a basic property, with very dated furnishings, but it's in a great location opposite the river and it's clean.

If you are watching the dollars and don't need luxury, this is worth considering.

Have to say that the location was the best part of the stay. Opposite of Swan river and a beautiful park. Sadly, the lobby wasn't a 24 hour lobby as we arrived at 6am, with a baby may I add. So. Wasn't a great welcome for us... Facilities were average, they have the basics such microwave, stove, fridge, Telly, and laundry services. Minus the interior which was a reminiscence of mr bean's apartment. But if ure out most of the time like us, than that wouldn't be a factor. Then again, it's Perth where everything closes at 5pm..... Best for family on a budget like us!
