Good economy hotel right downtown. Everything in our room was clean and worked. However, the room size and style were cramped and basic. We recommend it at the right price but don't plan to spend idle time in your suite.

The location of this hotel is excellent, and this is the main draw. It's right on Hay Street and opposite the free CAT bus stop. Next door is a convenience store. Now for the room itself. We booked a double room online but were given a three-bedder upon check in. The room was spacious but the furnishings and beddings looked extremely dingy and dated. The curtains in the room seemed dusty too. WiFi was free but very temperamental. At times, I couldn't even get a WiFi connection on my mobile in the lobby! Overall I guess you get what you pay for. As a cheap room to rest after spending the day out in Perth city, Criterion Hotel was passable.

OK if you just want somewhere central to return to and a very comfortable bed - but not a 'spoil yourself' experience. Unmatched city centre location for the price. We booked two rooms for the fringe festival and fireworks - both a short walk away. The double room was rougher - the twin was larger and much better maintained - quite comfortable in an 'old Aussie hotel' way. Need to pick your room! Maybe the double was not usually booked out as hotel was completely full? Essentially clean in hygiene terms and staff were excellent.
History: the current hotel is a 1937 art deco design with many features remaining but almost hidden, to be discovered. Its potential to be an excellent 'period' hotel isn't exploited. It is also on the oldest public house site in Perth (first hotel on this site was pre 1848). While sitting in the cafe you can contemplate how the city grew around it. The Perth Town Hall, opposite, wasn't built until 1867 so in the 1840's the earlier pub on the site would have been sitting up on a hill with only a few neighbours.

Room Tip: Rooms vary greatly, a double on the 1st floor was smaller and quite run down, a twin on the 2nd floo...

My expectations were very low considering the room was costing a total of $115 for 3 of us to stay - by far the cheapest accommodation in Perth... so I was very pleasantly surprised by how okay it was. The room was clean (and didn't smell at all), the bathroom was functional, the bed was comfy and it was super close to the city.
We were staying for a girls night out in the city - so only needed the room for the bed and shower. We were able to walk into the city and avoid paying for a taxi and the licenced IGA next door meant we were able to buy a drink for while we were getting ready. (There's also a couple of pubs around the corner)
As mentioned previously - it's super dated and a little crusty but we weren't staying there for the carpet on the floor or the tiles in the bathroom - we were there because it's cheap and close to the city.
If I wanted a romantic night in the city with my husband this isn't the place I would stay - but if I need a room again to crash at the end of the night it would be the first place I'd stay.
You can't beat the price and location!!

Stayed there for 3 nights. The location is good. I was given a complimentary bottle of red wine which was nice. The breakfast is extra though which I wasn't impressed by. The wifi is quite temperamental but not too bad. The bathroom light didn't work and the fittings inside the rooms were all quite average. Overall, the place is average. I didn't see a pool or any exercise facilities but i didn't look too hard.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the road will be nice for a view but possibly not great due to the sound from the...

The hotel is in an excellent location but it's hard to justify a rating other than average based on price vs facilities. It's in an older building so has a "used" feel to it.

Staff on the front desk were either disinterested or cared depending on who you spoke to. The internet was down for 2 days so they are obviously using the cheapest internet service rather than paying for their customers to have a good experience. Having just travelled through Cambodia and Vietnam I found it amazing that a Perth central hotel could not provide a reliable internet service whereas those two countries could.

There is an onsite restaurant which looks ok and they did give a coupon for a free drink and 20% off one meal so that is a nice touch however when I wanted to extend my stay they upped the price so I left and went to the Travel lodge which had just dropped theirs ($20 a night difference) and was on the same street up the road - so this is worth checking out too.

Room Tip: Ask for one close to the router if you want working internet - otherwise you'll stand in the lo...
