Reviewed 18 November 2013

We are a family of 3 (2 adults + 1 toddler) and we stayed at The Richardson in November 2013 in a one bedroom suite (Room 301) which had a large, bright balcony facing Richardson Street.

SERVICE
At all stages of our stay we felt welcomed and were addressed personally. The staff were knowledgeable about the surroundings (e.g. how to find a children's play-area in King's Park), helpful with bags etc. and very professional. Housekeeping equally of high standard.

DECOR/STYLING
The exterior, lobby and common areas of the hotel look modern and sophisticated. The interior fit of the rooms is to a high standard but the styling did look slightly dated (lots of browns & beiges) and didn't really fit the common areas (everything white) but that's just an aesthetic issue - everything was clean and new.

BATHROOM
We were in a 1-bedroom suite and whilst the size of the unit overall was good, the bathroom was quite small and there was no separate shower cubicle - something I would really expect paying The Richardson's prices and indeed was expecting as the website claimed that all 1-bedroom suites "have a separate bath and shower" (quoted direct from website).

INTERNET
Wireless internet was included in our room-rate and we had good connectivity. A speed-test I conducted at 8pm yielded 9.8 Mb/s download and 4.5 Mb/s upload with a ping of 4 ms.

PARKING
There is a paid-parking facility (A$20 per day) which we found very useful.

LOCATION
West Perth is - obviously! - not Central and there are some reviews which mark down this hotel for being 'away from the action'. I have to say that we did have some trouble on the weekend finding coffee shops / restaurants that were open (it's a business area so outside business areas many places are closed) and the area is generally quiet but honestly getting to central Perth is very easy and does not take long. There is a "CAT" bus service that takes you from central Perth to very close to the hotel within 15 minutes.

OVERALL
Our experience overall was very good and we would definitely recommend this hotel, especially if you have children (King's Park is a 5-minute easy walk away). For those seeking a Central location or something along the style of a "W" hotel this is not the place for you!

My daughter surprised me with an overnight stay in a two bedroom suite for my birthday, the suite was spacious and really lovely with quality furnishings and decor, two sparkling clean bathrooms one with a deep bath and seperate shower the second with a combined shower bath, the towels were luxurious as were the bathrobes. The complimentary toiletries were of a premium quality always a lovely touch and reflected the overall quality of this hotel.
The beds were firm and so comfortable with high quality linens and the feather down pillows were a delight.
On our arrival was a complimentary basket of beautiful fresh seasonal fruits and berries and a bottle of spiced ice tea most welcome after our long drive up from the South west the personalised hand written note from the manager wishing us a pleasent stay was a lovely touch.
The mini bar was well stocked with a lot of tempting choices at reasonable prices and the inclusion of a Nespresso coffee machine with complementary coffee pods in a variety of strengths and flavours was very welcome.
Parking on the street is free on weekends and we managed to park right outside the front of the hotel opting to take a taxi into the city a short drive costing approx $12.00 in most cases less than the parking costs in the CBD.
We ordered room service a chicken panini which was delicious and came with a generous serve of beautifully cooked and presented home cut chips and a choice of mini jars of sauces it was delivered promptly by a friendly and cheery staff member. We found all staff members to be attentive friendly and eager to please, the restaurant staff were lovely and very familiar with all aspects of the menu, overall all members of staff are a credit to the hotel.
The small bar was relaxing and although there was a function in the adjoining room and bar staff were very busy I was served quickly, one small niggle was the limited cocktail selection on the bar menu although I was advised that I could choose something off the menu and they would make it for me.
My daughter used the gym and gave it a good+ rating, the pool area that was very clean and inviting we did not use the spa facilities but looking at the services they were many choices.
We ate at the Opus restaurant and the food was very good it was a little tardy arriving but we were offered apologies and a complimentary entree by the attentive staff and the meal was worth the wait.
Our only negatives and there are only a couple were that the hotel lacks a certain warmth and friendliness in design particularly the main lobby/reception area.
The second and main one was the breakfast which in our opinion was overpriced for what was offered, the choices were very limited and unclear and the display/setup uninspiring and not at all inviting, my daughter and I have stayed in many of the top rated hotels in Australia and the breakfast offering at the Richardson was definetely towards the bottom of our list it was so completely out of keeping with the rest of what this hotel offers.
Would I/we stay again absolutely and most certainly in a heartbeat we would just choose not to have breakfast at the hotel next time as this was our only real negative in an otherwise delightful stay at this prestige boutique hotel.

What a pleasure it is to read that your birthday surprise was a wonderful and elegant experience. I am happy to hear that all aspects of your stay were to your satisfaction. Our Chef has taken your comments regarding the breakfast on board and has presented a new menu and buffet display which is receiving good reviews.

Thank you for your review and we certainly look forward to welcoming you back.

I had great expectations. probably that's the reason why I feel lukewarm about the hotel. aseptic, warm but ordinary, lacks vibrancy, lacks character. there is nothing special about this hotel in the west side of perth. away from street activity, away like in suburbia. if you want to stay in a quiet anonymous neighborhood this is the place.

Thank you for taking the time to review our boutique hotel.
There are a few aspects of your review that I wish to address.
The Richardson Hotel is enjoyed by guests who are seeking a relaxing, quality 5 star experience, with great customer service and attention to detail.
We do not promote ourselves as being a “hub of activity” nor are we positioned on a busy high street. All details of our hotel and our location are quite clearly identified on our website and I would assume that you researched this prior to your arrival at the hotel. The Richardson is not a “resort” and does not portray itself as such. It is regrettable that you were disappointed with your stay.

Great staff and huge 2BR suite. The staff made a large welcome cookie for my son with his name on it -- nice touch! Almost perfect boutique hotel near Kings Park. Only flaw was view from balcony was of back street.

We stayed in the Richardson, for several days - October 10th onwards, as a special treat at the end of our four week holiday in Australia. We found it to be one of the best hotels in which we have ever stayed, and we have visited many of the most highly rated hotels in the world. It is exactly as it proposes to be i.e. a 'family run hotel' and we did get a true sense of 'family' during our stay. Sean Fields, the hotel manager did his utmost to ensure that we enjoyed our stay - with well thought out special touches such as a hand written 'welcome' card. All the staff were friendly, efficient and attentive without being obsequious - you felt that they genuinely wanted to be helpful and do their utmost to secure everything you needed in order to enjoy your stay. The Welcome Lounge had bottled water, quality (not freeze dried) coffee and handmade biscuits, free of charge - a nice touch; the resturant staff went out of their way to deliver magnificent breakfasts (the food in the Richardson was exceptional) even though we were very late one morning. The Opus resturant was outstanding - a fine dining experience indeed. The bar staff and wine waiters were knowledgable and highly efficient and the chef remembered us - one evening to the next, and prepared dishes that differed from the menu in order to give us a variety of tastes and flavours with no repition. The Spa delivered a magnificent treatment - one of the best we've experienced and our suite was beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. Thank you so much one and all, a stay at the Richardson was a memorable conclusion to our holiday; an experience we will be aiming to repeat during our next visit to Perth. John and Lin

We stayed at the Richardson for our wedding anniversary. We had a two night package that included a deluxe room, dinner at Opus, 15% off Spa Treatments and breakfast in the Conservatory Café.
Arrived at the hotel from work Friday night and the staff were very welcoming, they upgraded us to a suite as it was our first stay, the manager personally came out and welcomed us and wished us a happy anniversary.
The suite was pleasant, not the biggest we have stayed in. The mini bar was reasonably priced. The hotel itself is very modern, and currently hasn’t developed any character. It seemed empty – there was no one in the foyer (except the receptionist), and it isn’t the sort of foyer you do anything but pass through, definitely no comfy couches and coffee. It actually reminds me of an airport hotel (a high class one). There are no views of parks or river.
The Spa was great, albeit overpriced, a pity the pool was out of service.
What really let the hotel down was the breakfast in the Conservatory Café. On the first morning I had the full American breakfast. The rubbery scrambled eggs were served on burnt toast, the sausages looked boiled (?), and the fat on the bacon was still white. On day two I had the continental breakfast, which was very disappointing in range, set up in a small area where the staff did not want you standing whilst they gossiped. Both mornings we were the only ones there at eight in the morning.
West Perth as a location is very quiet, rather boring, with little nightlife as it’s filled with offices. If the weather had been nicer its proximity to Kings Park may have been a bonus. Probably a great place to stay for business.

Dear BethDid,
Your comments, further to your recent visit, are appreciated – thanks for identifying the aspects of your stay which you found pleasing and those with which you took issue. Your comments regarding breakfast were helpful for us and we have addressed the things that went wrong with your two breakfasts.
Regarding your comments on the lobby design and its purpose – we do not have plans to change the lobby or its purpose. It was designed to be used for guest arrivals and departures, not as a food and beverage outlet. The Richardson has three lounge areas where guests can relax and enjoy coffee and drinks. It is unfortunate that you think the hotel “lacks character”! Our location, prices and facilities are all detailed on our web site and it is regrettable that you may have had expectations which we could not provide.

We recently stayed at this establishment for our one year anniversary and were thoroughly impressed. The staff were very helpful and courteous and the room was great.

The fridge was stocked with a lot of goodies including food if you wish to purchase it with decent prices. If you are coming late at night and long distance it is great to be able to have a room that you can cook and reheat food without ordering room service so we thought that it was great that the fridge had a pizza, soup and pasta to reheat if you are hungry and don't wish for room service.

The room service menu was also inviting though we chose to eat at The Opus restaurant (which was lovely for dinner).

Lots of towels given and coat hangers where other hotels tend to cut on this unless you ask. A lovely complimentary tea was also provided.

After a long drive to get to the hotel we were very happy to stay here for our honeymoon and would love to come again!
