The first time I came to this backpacker, I felt unwelcome. If you want to meet people, it's not here ! The girls bathroom is really dirty, same as for the kitchen but quite okay.
The first week, i was is a girl dorm which was "nice" but for the second time i was in a mixed dorm and it was a mess with stinky smell ! It was never cleaned in a week !!
The only good point is the location.

Myself and my girlfriend had been working around Perth for the past couple of months and had been staying with work colleagues who very nicely put us up, however we needed somewhere in Perth a couple of nights before flying out and the old swan barracks was really decent priced and was easy to book into, the staff here are so friendly and helpful, the dark haired male who works the bar is such a good laugh and is very sociable with everyone! The place is a bit dated however this was of no concern of mine as the price we were paying we didn't expect a really posh place! We stayed in a 6 person dorm, there is lockers provided which so far are the best sized ones we've come across in a hostel in WA however we noticed some weren't looking too good, luckily we got good ones! The only real negative was the room seemed to be too small for 6 people so it was a little squashed but for a couple of nights we were not worried about this! Personally I would recommend staying at this hostel as the size and amount of guests makes it very social and has a great atmosphere, so people staying in one hostel for a long period of time would be well suited to this hostel!

The Location is excellent, close to train, night clubs, Perth & Northbridge

The building is tired, the beds are old and not very comfortable, the furniture is old.

Strange rule, they prohibited people from bringing in their own sleeping bag. Unfortunately it was a cold night and the bedding provided was not sufficient. Fortunately I had an extra sweater and warm sweat pants.

For a backpackers the place was clean & the staff pleasant.

The price is cheap compared to other backpackers. For one night it was okay

Compared to paying $150 for a cheap hotel, this place was pretty good.

The Old Swan Barracks are located just north of Perth Central station so all of Perth CBD is accessible by walking. The rooms are a little small but are quiet at nights. The kitchen is of a decent size there are plenty of hobs and even an oven!!!!! The best bit about this hostel though is the massive hall/communial area which is full of sofas, pool tables, table tennis tables, TV's and a bar!

Stayed in the hostel for a month, but only because I was working full time and didn't have the time to look for a house share! I stayed in an 8 bed mixed dorm, the room was cramped, with nowhere to sit and not enough lockers in the room for everyone! Luckily I managed to get hold of one before they were all taken. We also had a couple of cockroach encounters in the room.. One time falling from the ceiling and the other we were unsure where it came from. The hostel is very large, with a large communal area in the form of a large hall with tables and chairs, sofas and a bar in the corner of the room. The kitchen facilities aren't great. They have a burger night weekly, where they take out all of the microwaves and toasters to make room for deep fat fryers, so you have to get in the kitchen early if you want to use these. On other nights, the kitchen usually gets really busy at around 6pm. It is nowhere near big enough for the size of the hostel. Fridge space is little too! You are required to put down a $10 deposit for a knife, fork, bowl, plate and cup set, which is refunded on return of the items. If you need to use a pan or pot, you are required to hand your room key over to reception, which is given back on return of clean equipment. I was fed up of having to do this every time I wanted to cook, so ended up going out and buying my own. The kitchen cloths are rank! They are replaced in the morning, but come lunch time, the hostel users have already wiped up spills from the tops with them and they are usually drenched come dinner time. I also noticed a few cockroaches running along the kitchen tops at times. The bathroom facilities aren't great either. A limited number of showers and they aren't the cleanest. It seems there are a lot of groups already formed at the hostel, which makes it difficult to meet new people as these groups tend not to bother with 'outsiders' and keep themselves to themselves. There is a free breakfast, which consists of cereal in the form of weetabix or corn flakes, or toast with butter, jam or marmalade. No milk is provided free of charge. There is also 'free' WiFi advertised, which actually turned out to be 1 hour of free WiFi per day. If you needed to use the internet for a long period, I'd recommend using the nearby library facilities. A positive about the hostel is its location, right by the City Museum and Art Gallery, and only a 5 minute walk into the CBD. The train station is also by the Art Gallery, so very useful if you're planning on working and don't have a car, or for day trips to Fremantle and Cottesloe.

I booked into the swan as my first hostel when arriving in Perth, looked decent but when I got there the staff didn't seem very interested in helping or giving information, the room was very run down and dirty, very often got cleaned by staff and when it was it was the quickest clean ever. Bathrooms weren't too clean and the kitchen was far too small for the size of the hostel.
Hostel is very big and found it hard to get to meet and know people.
Some of the staff were very nice, and the hostel does have a good bar and big screens for football etc. location is ideal too. But wouldn't really recommend it after staying in another hostel in perth
