Two of us stayed three nights on the farm in August, and it was undoubtedly the best part of our two-week holiday on the North Island. The West Hut was comfortable -- it had a heater and the double bed was also heated. The bathroom has a rustic feel to it, with bits of the outside -- grass, flowers -- peeking in from under the door, pretty. It can get a tad cold in the bath in winter, but the rain shower was good, strong and as hot as you want the water to be, much to our relief. Kylie's home-made meals were yummy and well presented; we were very well-fed.
Kylie was friendly and helpful, even forgave us for breaking a beautiful jug and didn't charge us for it. Andrew pretty much wowed us with his knowledge in everything, from woolshed design to training dogs to birthing lambs; we really enjoyed picking his brains! Smiley little Hannah was simply adorable, a joy to be around.
Activities-wise, we took a tour of the farm on Andrew's ATV, watched a mustering and shearing demonstration, bottle-fed a two-day-old lamb, fed the ponies, pig, rabbit, pet sheep, ducks, befriended the horses, among others. Also visited the Whitecliff Boulders outside the farm with Andrew and Kylie.
We can't say just how much fun we had with the animals. Most notably, Barney and Jamie, the family dogs, went with us on our first walk up to the picnic table one evening. Jamie the boss (the Jack Russell) led the way, taking care to turn back and bark at us to hurry up every once in a while. At the top, they waited patiently for us as we snapped pictures, chatted, etc. And later when we came down in the dark, instead of running ahead, this time they stayed close to show us the way back. Such darlings! (You would have thought the dogs were trained to do this, but apparently they weren't!)
We had an utterly enjoyable time. Rangitikei Farmstay deserves nothing less than a rave review!
