Description: We like food, real food, real flavour and a real eating experience - no starched table cloths and silverware just solid wood furniture and the kind of food you would cook for friends coming over, not pretentious but a step up from the everyday. We are slow food advocates - meaning the food doesn't come out of a packet or tin, but is prepared and consumed with pleasure, and with friends, the way it is meant to be. The menu is chosen by Mary, according to whim and weather on the day, and served buffet style so you can have as much as you want. We are fully licensed and smoke-free, with a warm fire in winter and glorious outdoor dining in the summer.

We took a tour group to this restaurant & relished every morsel! The group was our Sunday Lunch Club, & many of them said it was one of their favourite eateries - and we've been to a few!
We had such delights as a couscous, salmon prawn salad flavoured with kaffir lime & lemon grass; beetroot & red cabbage salad with almonds & other tasty ingredients; curried pumpkin; fresh garden veges roasted - & more! The dessert was feijoa ice-cream & delicious pear flan with other goodies in it. It was one of those meals that you savour slowly, hoping you could replicate all those beautiful tastes. The wine list was excellent too & we were pleased to see one of our favourites, St Clair.
We have already planned another visit with a different group - testimony to the quality of the venue.

I stayed with Lance and Mary while enjoying a Ventouro Cycling Camp. The Styx is not expensive but what a fabulous place and great value for money. I enjoyed an intimate atmosphere where nothing is too much trouble. The basics are done to an extremely high standard and the food is made from fresh ingredients and is plentiful. Lance is a warm host with a gentle manner - Mary is just a sweetheart. Nestled in some beautiful countryside with the extra things that make a stay just that bit nicer like free wifi and several hot tubs dotted around. Highly recommended.

Beyond all expectation. When they said dinner was included, I did not realise Mary produces culinary miracles!
Great room, great view, great company and an amazing wild life tour by Phil (thanks Phil!).

The Styx is 1.5 km from the Maungatautarii Reserve, and serves a most-wonderful Prix-fixe meal, served buffet-style. Ours started with an assortment of dips, followed by the main meal of duck glazed with a cranberry sauce, served on roasted vegetables, excellent lamb chops, broccoli, zucchini fritters (extraordinary things-light and airy and delicious), Caesar salad and couscous. Desert was homemade cardamon ice creme served with a plum cake. The company was excellent, the dining room light and comfortable, and our hosts, Mary and Lance simply Outstanding.
For us, the Styx was the culmination of an all-day tramp across the Maungatautari Mountain--13.5km of up and down that took took us almost 6 hours, at a leisurely pace. Lanced dropped us off a the northern end and we walked back to our car at the Styx.

Just back from another experience at Out in the Styx. I'd been twice previously just for dinner, although just and dinner should not be in the same sentence when describing a meal at Out in the Styx! This time we arrived early in the morning, walked over the mountain and came back for a spa and then dinner. We stayed the night in three bunk rooms, (there were 8 of us) had fab, hot, high pressure showers and the most delicious breakfast in the morning. The beds were comfortable and had electric blankets to warm us up plus extra duvets and blankets should we need them.
I can't wait to go back!!
