Owner description: Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is a mainland ecological island surrounded by the world's longest pest-proof fence. It's located between Matamata and Waitomo in the North Island of New Zealand. At Sanctuary Mountain you can experience New Zealand the way it used to be - an ancient, vibrant pest-free forest alive with native wildlife such as birds, skinks, geckos, frogs, bats and insects. Step through the pest-proof gate into another world where ancient New Zealand forest towers majestically above well maintained walking tracks and the air is filled with birdsong.

Highly recommend you visit this place. It has the wow factor. It is very special. I walk miles and Kim's in the South Island backcountry yet the birds here are right on our back door. Wheel chair friendly, knowledgeable guides. Not to be missed.

I use to hike this mountain as a young girl. I now enjoy revisiting this tranquil peace of New Zealand. If your group is quiet you will get to see many native birds however they do not show when you have people calling out or running around. The lookout up high in the canopy is great. I have done this twice now & just love seeing how much everything has grown. Do yourself a favour and put it on your todo list in NZ.

Great place to see many of New Zealands native birds. It is newish so the pests haven't been gone long however the forest regeneration and mature bush is already looking much better than it was a few years ago when I last visited.

It can also provide a 5-6 hour hike over the mountain if you feel up to it!
