I have been to the Sawmill a couple of times and have always enjoyed it. It is fair to say that it isn't serving the most complex of menus but it is the Sawmill Cafe, not the Sawmill 5 star restaurant.

The wife and I went there for my birthday. We wanted to relax, watch Trinity Roots (played that night) and not travel hours from Auckland.

The place is casual. We arrived and no one is in too much of a rush to do anything but service does come in a reasonable time and it is super friendly. We enjoyed a pizza bread in the early afternoon and a couple of pints of their locally made beer. All very nice and conveniently charged to our room.

Our room was one of the four (I think) private rooms (there is a dorm as well) which has a little patio area and the usual amenities. It is simple, functional and the planet hugging toiletries and home made fudge are a great addition. We freshened up, read a book and wandered back later in the evening for dinner.

Dinner was a couple of courses and was well done. It is what I would expect from a very good cafe. The wine list is really good and all fairly priced. They put us in an area where we could watch the gig later that night without having to abandon our table. Its fair to say that some of the patrons got into it a little later than others but you have to expect that when a venue is hosting a live act which they regularly do. Signs clearly state that courtesy is required and a stern voice reminded some overexcited youths only once while we were there. (It wasn't me)

The next morning we woke, refreshed and left. We would have stayed for breakfast but they don't open the restaurant till 10am which is a little late for us. It wasn't ideal but hardly overshadowed what was otherwise a great trip.

Highly recommend the Sawmill for a relaxing atmosphere that is pleasantly complimented by a vibrant feel.

Room Tip: If you want quiet and secluded go somewhere else.

Basically a large pub with rooms, the Sawmill was a real disappointment when we ate there. First night when we went to just look at the menus they had a Reggae/Ska evening.....definitley an acquired taste. Second night we arrived before 8.00pm and found the place virtually deserted and the only food available was a $25 pizza.

The best part of staying at the Sawmill is being close to such a good restaurant and bar. The Sawmill brews their own beer and the pale ale is tasty. The accommodations are spartan but serviceable and the room with the ensuite bathroom I stayed at was quite big. There is no TV in the room and no internet on the premises so you'll need a book to keep preoccupied. Otherwise just head to the bar and have fun mingling with the tourists and the amazing wait staff.

Had a wonderful stay at the Leigh Sawmill Cafe in mid-April 2008. Stayed in a private room for $100 NZ (actual rate per night is more but we contacted the hotel well in advance and they offered us $100 NZD/night). Shared 'dorm-style' accomodation is also available.

ROOM: Very large, spacious room with queen-sized bed. TV, coffee maker, kettle and tea/coffee, sugar etc. all in in room. We also had some locally made fudge in our room next to our pillow. Very nice touch - and yummy!!! The room was very clean and quiet - perfect for a relaxing country getaway.

PATIO: Each of the rooms has a private patio area with a table and two chairs. The patio also had a bench so there is heaps of seating outside.

BATHROOM: Large, clean and good shower. All natural tolietries (shampoo, soap, conditioner) were provided. Very nice.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Sawmill Cafe. My only tip would be that when you arrive, go directly to the Cafe to check-in - this is in a serperate building from the accomodations. They will give you your key and direct you to the accomodation building. Also check-out at the cafe. Also, note the bar/cafe is only open Thurs - Sun.

We stayed at the Sawmill Cafe which was an old saw mill that has been converted to a cafe and accomodation. They have backpacker accom or separate rooms. We had the individual room -NZ$125 per night ( queen bed plus two singles) Huge rooms and bathroom - all natural toiletries provided. Sliding doors from the room lead to an outside area with table and chairs( for your own use)
The cafe itself is great. Big wooden tables, food was fresh, good wine list with lots of New Zealand wines and friendly service. They have bands there on the weekends.

We have stayed at The Sawmill many times over the last few years and previously it has been really good. The rooms are large, sparsely but elegantly furnished, with a comfortable bed and a good bathroom. Each room has its own private courtyard, and the surroundings are rustic and pleasant. However ( and a big however), the last time we were there the other rooms and the bunkroom were all booked by a large group of people who seemed to be having a reunion of some kind. They stayed up all night carousing, yelling & singing, eventually fighting with each other, and the noise was appalling. It didn't stop until daylight. The Sawmill management couldn't have cared less (there is no-one on duty in the accommodation wing at night), and we had such a miserable night of no sleep and having to listen to brawls that I will never go there again. Be warned. Or book the entire place and have your own party!
