Basic accomodation but the people are very friendly without being overbearing, the ideal combination: You feel welcome and you are given your own space. The food is very good. The tours are excellent, the guides really know their island and the birds it is very interesting. The island is a gem. A must if you can do it.

We had a fantastic day trip to Kapiti Island with Ngati Toa Kapiti Tours. I'm still not sure what the difference is between the three operators but we give these guys our highest recommendation. Very professional and fast good boat to get across. We opted for the tour guide and it was a great decision. We learned not only about the birds but also about the history of the region as our guides were from a local tribe. They also taught us about some native plants so we had the opportunity to chew on a leaf that was peppery and another that was numbing. We took the Wilkinson track and it was great including a picnic table next to a bird feeder half way to the top.

This is an amazing place. It is another pest free bird sanctuary. Every New zealandet and visitor to New Zealand should visit it. To see our native birds wandering free and in their natural habitat is important. You will never forget this experience.

We travelled to Kapiti Island with 3 adults and 2 children, aged 4 and 6 years (both usually good walkers). Overall, we enjoyed it - beautiful setting, wonderful bush, easy 15 minute ferry ride across (complete with cool tractor pulling you to the beach) and lots and lots of birds (we saw various examples of weka, kaka, tui, saddleback, hihi, weta, robin, kereru). Birdlife was quite amazing, and far greater than other regional nature sanctuaries we've been to. The downside was the really limited information about what our track options were. It is unclear from the websites where you are going to land and at no point did our tour operator explain our landing options. As a result we did the Wilkinson track in the middle of the island. This track is really well kept and has lots of switch-backs so the gradient is very manageable. Having said that, it is climbing uphill non-stop for 2 hours with 2 picnic tables and no lookouts or other seats on the way, which gets really old for kids (and some adults)... so we did not make it to the top and did not find it a relaxing walk. Given it's an expensive outing (although this is understandable for their great conservation outcomes), I'd recommend that families actively ask their tour operator about which walk they'd suggest and plan their landing accordingly.

Thanks for your feedback and comments.- It's important to note that the DOC process and involvement in visits to Kapiti Island has changed, from 1 January 2013. Basically, prospective visitors now have to visit the website of the 3 DOC licensed tour operators to get information about the various options and offerings available via each of the operators(we are one of them-but probably not the operator you travelled with)-each of us has a different approach and different options available- we tend to concentrate on the "northend" of the Island where the walking options are less strenuous - that's because our Lodge and staff are located at that landing point. My suggestion to any prospective visitor is to look at the 3 operator websites referred to on the DOC website related to Kapiti Island. Hope this is useful.
