“Very nice and comfortable.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2011

Auckland City Hotel is well located, one block away from Queen Street, which is the main street of Auckland Centre. Cafe’s, restaurants, convenience stores and ATM’s are all within a minute’s walk. The Skytower is literally just up the road. Access to public transport is very easy, so in general the location is perfect, although the Auckland City Mission across the road attracts the usual group of vagabonds and societies degenerates, but you wouldn’t be standing on the footpath out the front of the hotel for long and staff at the hotel ensure there is no problem inside the hotel.
The entry foyer is large and comfortable, with a business centre, separate meeting room, computers and nice big seats and a TV. There were always plenty of staff waiting to serve at the counter, so there was no delay in my dealings with them.
The hotel boasts on-site cafe, restaurant and spa – I didn’t try any, but they are there if you need them. Two fast and efficient lifts provide access to the room. Mine was on the 9th floor and was very roomy. Large, comfortable bed, full length desk, TV, fridge with tea/coffee facilities, glasses, plenty of drawers, separate chair and coffee table and a large wardrobe containing a safe were all packed in efficiently and without cluttering the room. The bathroom was similarly large and comfortable. All in all the room seemed very new and fresh. The room includes a heater and a fan for temperature control and the windows could be opened as well to allow some fresh air in. TV even has a hotel channel listing the local sights! The only annoying thing is that the shower is not enclosed, so once you have a shower the entire bathroom floor gets wet which was a little annoying.
My room looked straight at an adjoining apartment complex so there was not much of a view. Street noise was significant, as was noise from the neighbouring apartments, especially when I opened the window. The blinds are reasonable, but if you are a late-riser like me, they do not do much to block out the morning sun.
Internet costs were nothing short of ridiculous, but they included 30 minutes per day free wifi in the foyer area. I wouldn’t even bother with hotel internet – there are plenty of shops and restaurants that provide free wifi nowadays (the Gloria Jeans coffee shop on Victoria Street is 5 minutes away and allows 1 hour of internet with a purchase – good speed too!)
So pretty much a big thumbs up across the board for the hotel. Great location, good staff and pretty comfortable. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Maybe try to get a room on the south side???

We wanted to be somewhere central that offered onsite parking with decent facilities and this hotel ticked the required boxes.

The rooms are good sized and very clean. They match those of some other more expensive Auckland hotels I have stayed in for business. The bathroom and shower was good. It is the high room quality that made this hotel one I would recommend.

The location is excellent for having a park and being right next to all the action. If I was travelling alone I would be slightly more weary, but not for any particular reason or bad experiences.

The staff service was a little hit and miss - some were absolutely fantastic and there to help, others you felt were there to get their wages and get home. The breakfast was relatively poor for the standard of the hotel, more breakfast options could be presented and in a better way. It let the feel of the hotel down. I have heard dinner is better, but did not get opportunity.

Overall, this was a good hotel to be in the centre and allow access around the city but it is not a warm fuzzy feeling one! :)

We stayed at Auckland City hotel for a 4 night business trip. Arriving at 1.00am was a bit tricky as the front desk had trouble understanding English although after muddling through we managed to make headway! The hotel was well appointed but found it very noisy due to the location, perhaps a suburb stay may have been better. The rooms were clean & well appointed & once again we had great communication difficulty with the housekeeping staff, maybe that issue should be looked at as most of the guests are of English speaking backgrounds. Car parking is charged at a rate of $25.00NZD a day which is very limited & hard to negotiate. I feel that parking should be incorporated into the nightly tariff so save hassle. Overall, it was pleasant but would suggest looking further afield as Auckland isn't that big a place that you need to be right in the heart of town.

We were so impressed with this hotel. We arrived on New Year's Eve and just stepped out of the hotel to see the fireworks from the Sky Tower. So close we had a front row view. The room had a small kitchenette and lovely bathroom. All very fresh and nicely finished to a high standard. This was a great find.

Room Tip: Very convienient for everything, town, free buses

good location-good for short stay only -we stayed in a 2 bedroom unit with 3 adults-only had one bathroom that was so small only one person at a time could enter.Staff spoke little english and gave us bad directions and advice for 2 tourist attractions which we found frustrating.
Restaurant was pretty awful. The gentlemanat our next table complained and they just smiled and took his money.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at the Auckland City Hotel, as it is through these that we can continuously seek to improve our service offering at the hotel.

From time to time, we do have temporary staff that are on training (including student trainees) at the hotel, as they have no experience we usually have someone to mentor them on the job. On occasions they may have interacted with customers independently during busy times, we hope that they will learn from the experience and be able to help our guests at the same time. But we do apologise if this has caused inconveniences.

To improve our staff's knowledge of surrounding attractions, we have employed an experienced concierge person to train them as well as set up our systems to provide up to date information on this. So this short-coming is been addressed. In the future, we will try to give more training and guidence to trainees before they are "let loose" to interact with our guests, this will serve improve their service quality.

As for the restaurant, although they are an independently run business, we will continuously work with them so that they are able to improve their service offering as well. Again, thank-you for your valuable feedback.

A good choice if you want to stay in central Auckland, as it is only ten minutes (walking) away from the skytower and 15 minutes from the Queens Street. The staff was friendly and the room was clean and at a reasonable size. The bed was very comfortable. Also in the room were a TV, a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, a big wardrobe and an ensuite bathroom (which was modern, just big enough and clean). The only thing I might criticize, it could all be a bit more charming.

All in all OK for our stay, but somewhat shabby neighbourhood. No air condition in the room we stayed, and that might make your stay unpleasant if sun shines brightly...

We thank-you for your valuable feedback. We have now installed portable air-conditioning units into almost all of our rooms. Some rooms are awaiting a suitable technical solution as we need to find ways to ventilate the hot air from the back of the units.

As mentioned in previous responses, we are supporting the work of the Auckland City Mission in their work with the underprivileged and their long term goal of building a high-rise to better serve and contain them. Although previous guest comments have indicated that these people are quite friendly, we do understand the anxieties of some guests and this long term solution would improve the perception of the neighbourhood as well.

Again, thank-you for your feedback.
