“Probably best to avoid.”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

I did get an EXCELLENT deal for the room I was in, plus I received an upgrade on arrival ( Which as pointless as it gave an extra queen bed when I was a solo traveller).

This place had too many bad vibes about it, and most of them were spot on.

Firstly, within the guest comments the only thing I'd noted before my booking was that it is IMPERATIVE that WiFi works in my room. This never happened, and I spent about 3 hours trying to reconcile with the staff on what to do..eventually it was fixed..with much troublesome effort.

Upon arrival, I found the (Malaysian?) lady at the front to be abrasive and insouciant. Staff seemed to treat me as more of a hindrance than a customer. They were not particularly helpful on advising what to do /where to go in Auckland as it was my first time here in almost 11 years.

The room itself was average. The bathroom was very small, and as another user mentioned, the water actually leaks into the kitchen area (and as a result I almost slipped at one point).

There were far too few amenities..all I had was a tiny bottle of soap!

I wouldn't stay here again- which is why i will spend the final night in the rydges- however, the value and location are probably worth the $$ if you want a cheap hassle-free sleep over.

Great location for staying near the CBD, right near the Sky Tower. Annoying having to hand car keys in overnight and $25 is a little pricey for parking. We picked a standard room which is starting to look a bit dated, net curtains a bit dirty, door needs painting etc. BUT, perfectly fine for one night at the price you pay and had good nights sleep.

A better location than we'd imagined from simply looking at the Auckland city map. Very close to the InterCity bus terminal, Sky City Tower, iSITE, etc., and a comfortable walk from the wharf. Only minor problem is that it's near the top of an ancient volcano, so no matter where we walked it was up hill on the way back.

Nice room at a good price; it suited us better than a luxury hotel. The staff were (was?) friendly and helpful, especially when we arrived way before normal check-in. A little noisy a couple of times ... we had the room on our floor closest to the elevator. Internet connection was not free ... it seemed a little expensive so we went out to one of the many free WiFi locations nearby.

We look forward to coming back here for six more days next week.

Room Tip: Ask for a room down the hall, not close to the elevator.

I don't think I can go above 3 stars for this hotel. It was decent. Not great. The room was okay, the bed was fine, the bathroom was small but it was fine (though it was odd that you couldn't open the shower door and bathroom door at the same time.

The people at the front desk were nice, but not particularly helpful. We asked about where to get breakfast and they gave us the restaurant in the hotel and that was it. And that was the worst meal we had on our 3 1/2 week trip.

The location is fine. You're only a couple of blocks from the SkyTower complex and maybe a 20-minute walk from the harbour.

So yeah, I think the hotel was like $125 a night and that's probably about the type of hotel it was. A $125 hotel in a big-ish city. Decent for what it was, slightly overpriced. Nothing wrong with it at all (except for the restaurant in the hotel which I don't think is affiliated), but don't think you're staying at a nice Marriott or anything like that. It was clean, the shower was hot, and the bed was decently comfortable. That's 3/4 of the battle right there....

I think I'd investigate some other hotels in the area and roll the dice on one before staying there again, but if someone booked me there I wouldn't fight them at all. It was fine.

My husband and I stayed at this property a total of 3 nights during our trip to New Zealand - 2 nights at the beginning of our trip and 1 night at the end of our trip. Overall we were pleased with the property and the location was very good. Also, the room was very spacious and had a living room/office area as well as a kitchenette so it definitely fit our needs well as far as space and function.

Pros:
-Quick & easy check-in
-Front desk told us about many amenities
-Restaurant on site - we did not try but it seemed to have very reasonable lunch prices
-Room was very spacious - it feautred a double bed, love seat, desk tv, closet, stocked kitchenette, and bathroom
-Bed was very comfortable
-Great location - 1 block to Sky Tower/5 blocks to Viaduct Harbour

Cons:
-We thought parking was included with our package, but we ended up paying $10/day which was apparently a discount. When we returned to the hotel they originally charged us $25/day and we had to have that fixed.
-The bathroom seemed small - the bathroom door cannot be open at the same time as the shower door. The shower leaked into the kitchen and hall area extensively.
-Only 2 towels were provided and we had to request extra.
-No maid service between 1st and 2nd night; had to request towels a 2nd time.
-Tea/coffee provided was not high quality at all.
-During 2nd stay there was no room to park and we were not provided a free internet code. We were also charged extra for parking - it was like we were staying at a totally different hotel even thought it was just one week later.
-Restaurant was closed when we arrived at 8:50 even though the signage said it was open until 9:30pm.
-Front desk told us that the only restaurants that were open was Denny's and Pizza Hut. We placed a takeaway order at Denny's and then found out there were tons of other places open in the same building as Denny's that we would have rather eaten at.

The staff seemed to be perfunctory only and not all that friendly. The room was comfortable and spacious and in a great location so for us that seemed to trump most of the cons. There is a large homeless shelter across the street which didn't seem very safe when we were walking back at night.

Room Tip: They seem to be doing some renovations and window washing - I would make sure to be on a floor where...

We arrived at 10 p.m. to discover that there was no room service; we were directed to a convenience store 100 metres down the street where, despite the pouring rain, I was able to purchase some snacks. The bar fridge was empty; we were directed to a liquor store across the street. Breakfast was pretty basic and there was no bacon. When we pointed this out we were told that we could have some "chicken bacon" whatever that is. The hotel is advertised as being in a heritage building; we now know that heritage means "old and in need of attention". Wifi does not work on the 6th floor, you have to go down to the reception area to get a signal. The window would not close properly and when the wind blew, as it does in Auckland, it sounded like an aircraft taking off. The TV channels were all messed up and TV reception for the local channels was terrible. I reported this and asked for it to be fixed but it wasn't. Apart from all that, the room was spacious and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.

This property is right in the heart of central Auckland. It is a 3-4 mins walking distance from the Auckland sky tower. Parking around the hotel is a problem! Need to pay about 20 dollars a night for parking. Continental breakfast was good, however their coffees were a disappointment. The selection of fruits can be better. Rooms are good and spacious. our rooms were on 3rd floor, which was pretty quiet. The staff at the reception were pretty courteous. the hotel also provided with a free wifi for 30 mins a day.

Room Tip: Hobson street is quiet a noisy street. rooms on the top floors will avoid the noise to disturb your...
