We spent several hours looking around the galleries and were ready for a good lunch in the cafe. It was Sunday and it seemed strangely quiet in the cafe but we went anyway. We had bread and oily dip which was okay and had ordered summer vegetable soup. Our coffee arrived first and it was good as most NZ coffees are. The toasted bread was fine. We waited a long time for the soup to arrive and it seemed an age as we shivered in the air conditioning. Couldn't believe it when it arrived - savoury water with some hard pieces of carrot and onion, topped with a leaf. We called the waiter and asked him to take the soup back as it was the worst soup we had ever had. There was no apology, no offer of a substitute or a refund. For the 10th time he said "No problem". Well it was a problem for us as we were cold, hungry and fed up. We went to another restaurant nearby to eat but we had wasted time and money at the cafe. It really lets the gallery down. Enjoy the art and architecture but eat elsewhere.
