“Poor housekeeping services.”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

I recently returned from a 3 week stay in this serviced hotel/apartment, it is rated 4.5 stars, but beware European travelers it is equal to a low 3 star. Our room had an air of grubbiness to it, dirty cushions, window blinds stained, dirty windows, visible streak marks on cupboard doors. Bed linen was a polyester/cotton mix, would have expected pure cotton. Some of the crockery was chipped and there was a cheap white chopping board supplied which had yellow staining on it, while I am aware that these boards stain easily, they are cheap and easily replaceable alternatively use a different color or ceramic/glass ones. Room service was very lax, sheets were changed and towels replaced, floors vacuumed but vacuum cleaner not supplied as stated, no dusting, I actually wrote "dust me" and "dust me too" on tv and tv stand, but after two days could wait no longer and bought furniture polish. Also lift was out of service for several leaving only one to service all 25 floors as we were high up using the stairs was out of the question, they did apologise but only after 3 days. Reception staff very friendly and helpful, but area very small and tight if more than 6 people in it, it feels claustrophobic. Parking is very expensive about €20 per 24 hr period cheaper option is available but car must be removed by 6 a.m. or charged €3 every half hour thereafter. Internet service also available but also expensive, Sky TV refers to one sky movie channel and one sky TV channel, 2 sports and sky news and MTV, we lost one channel half way through, was expecting better really. If I had booked 3 star I would have got what I expected, but having saved for this trip was disappointed with accomodation.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front have less a/c noise, we had a car park or something below and large roof fans run...

Stayed one night here, room was nice size and had everything we needed. Liked the fact we had our own bathrooms. Not hotel parking but there is a rate with public parking next door, bit annoying. Good location, close to sky tower. Wifi has to be paid by the hour.

The rooms were much smaller than what it seemed on-line. However, perfect location in the middle of town. Room had not been vacumned, and heater was dusty. Seriously questioned how clean the rest of the apartment was. Beds were comfy, and did not hear any noise. Staff not very friendly, and did not ask how our stay was - though we were only there for one night. I think there is better accommodation for the same price and same location.

Room Tip: Can't remember what floor we were on, but we were facing the Sky tower. Great view, however the...

Stayed at the Barclay on a Saturday night for a trip into "town." Very economical price and satisfying stay for the one bed suite. Our room was on the 23rd floor. Fitted out with most basic of furniture and décor. With two couches and a table and chairs. Kitchenette had enough basics for mid length stay if you required it. There was a lingering musty smell, but I think that someone previous might have flooded the apartment as the carpet was a little warped over by the bathroom. But the location and size of the room is very generous. Yes there was a little noise, but you are in a city, open the windows and linger on the little balcony to lap up the usual experience that most apartment dwellers in Auckland have. There was no AC but we survived. This would only be a tragic "first world problem" for the most fussy travellers. Put the blinds down and the heat from the sun will subdue. The reception staff and manager were very friendly and helpful. This is not a luxury 5 star rated accommodation, so if you are considering staying here please do not expect to have that kind of service and décor. But if you are like most, and the want to go out and "see" the city and have a great base set off from. Then get excellent advice from the desk staff and a safe, good sized room with kitchen and laundry amenities in your own room then this is the place. There is even Sky TV with movies if you want to stay in and put your feet up to relax before you pop out to walk around the city again. To summarise, Yes we would stay again when we want simple and generously sized accommodation that is very very economical in Auckland Central.

This hotel is in an ideal location being within easy walking distance to many attractions and ammenities. The pricing is also very affordable, especially if traveling with more than 2 and wanting a 2 bed room option.
We stayed for one night and were pleased to be able to drop off our bags for secure storage at 10am the morning of our stay. I checked at this time about check in time and was told anytime from 2pm. On heading back at 3:30 we were told our room was still being cleaned and we would need to wait. At 4:20 we were able to check in to our room! This was a long time in the foyer (waiting with others in like position) and was the first time I had ever experienced such a service. I realise they were incredibly busy being Anzac weekend but this really was a bad start. I believe their late check out of 11am does them no favors as they are then not ready to check people in on time. Perhaps a change is needed management?
On a plus side the staff at this hotel all seem very polite and pleasant so keep up the great work in that respect.

Although we booked a deluxe 2 bed I would not say this was deluxe at all, in fact I wonder if we were down graded due to being full? One bathroom was very very small and the lounge/kitchen room was also small. There is not enough couch seating for 4 people either so would not advise booking this option if you are traveling with more than 3 people. The rooms also were looking very tired with mould on the roller blinds, one broken chain on one blind so this couldn't be pulled all the way down, grimy plugs and worn out paint on walls.

Overall a ok option for one night but not a good option for longer stays as too small.

Room Tip: We were level 7 and found the street noise very very loud till at least 3am. I believe views start f...

Had 2 nights here at the end of our NZ holiday. Great location in the middle of town, within easy walking distance of downtown, the viaduct and many bars, restaurants.
Had a great room on the 22nd floor. Spacious living area with kitchenette. Sky TV.
Small balcony off the living area. Fantastic views of Sky tower and over towards the harbour.
No curtains on the windows, only blinds so the light did come in quite a bit in the mornings - not good if you were hoping for a sleep in. Rooms were also quite warm, even with the windows and balcony door open but they do provide a fan.
Washing machine/ dryer in the bathroom with free detergent.
Good water pressure in the shower and all the rooms were cleaned to a high standard.
Wifi available in the room at a price although connection was a bit sketchy.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 22nd floor. 2204. Great view of Sky tower and over towards the harbour. Spaciou...

Downtown Auckland can be quite expensive and the competitive price of the Barklay Suites is quite attractive. On arrival we are upgraded to a "two bedroom" suite, but what on earth we are going to do with the extra room? His and her bathrooms? How is this an upgrade? The suite is well set out and equipped, but a little worn. And there is a stale smell which we can’t get rid of. Bad cooking from the efficient kitchenette, or too many blokes sharing? Despite the welcoming room rates, parking and internet are prohibitive here and we do not partake. Location is great and some of our favorite eateries are just around the corner, so that is a plus. The biggest downer comes when we turn the lights out. No air conditioning and it is still warm and humid in Auckland in April. And it is noisy outside tonight which is a problem with an open window seeking a breeze. Bottom line, no air con, too humid, too noisy, no go!

Room Tip: If you can handle humidity and noise, maybe this place is for you
