“Great Place to Stay”
Reviewed 6 February 2013

Staff were super friendly and very helpful. The hostel is a beautiful older building which has been well maintained. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would need and was clean. Outdoor areas are airy and comfortable. Bed mattress (double) could do with updating. Mattress protector and top bed sheet would have been good for hygiene. Overall though a great stay for the money.

Stayed here two nights at the beginning of our NZ travels. Very clean and spacious, pretty quiet as hostels go, staff were very nice and helpful. Nice couches out on the balcony upstairs & down. A slightly older vibe (25yrs +) but still good. Location not very close to the city but Mt Eden is a nice suburb and the walk up the hill has a great view, just off Mt Eden Rd. Would stay here again though as bus stops are very close and buses run frequently to/from the city.

Stayed here for 3 nights in Nov 2012.
Met by a very friendly and informative member of staff who showed us around and took us to our room.
Room was basic but bed comfy and very clean. Showers/bathrooms were immaculately cleaned and did not have to wait long in the mornings have a shower etc.
kitchen areas well stocked and again very clean. Plenty of big, clean fridges to store food and lockers provided by hostel to store dry food.
Nice social areas (big sofas and tv room).
Bit out of town but a bus stop is opposite the hostel which drops you right in the centre of Auckland.
Definitely a hostel to consider. We enjoyed our stay there

We stayed in a twin room for one night. It is a beautiful old, but very well kept building with a large yard, plenty of communal spaces that are extremely clean and comfy, not the usual hostel-shabbiness. Loads of parking spaces, a bit out of town, but close to Mount Eden with great views of the city. Also just a 10-15 minute walk to Mt Eden village with lot's of nice restaurants and bars. One of the better hostels we stayed in. Well deserving its Tripadvisor ranking!

Bamber House gets voted number 2 or 3 quite regularly as top of NZ backpackers. I'm not surprised. Friendly staff, spacious communal areas, clean, well equipped kitchen, coupons that give free internet (very good deal in NZ). The 2 guys Tim and Steve did a great job of organising events (cooking events, quiz nights, pizza nights to name but a few things) that give a good feel of community to the place. All ages were made to feel welcome - my sister and I are of an older generation but found we were not the only ones and that didn't seem to matter. Everyone seemed to get along well. We stayed in twin room with a bathroom, which was located outside the main building. Only grumble was that the walls are very thin. Location is great - a short bus ride, which you can catch right across the road, into town or a 10 minute walk to Mount Eden village, which is really nice. Plenty good transport links, including Outer Link buses. Preferred it here than centre of town - nice cafes and shops. Tennis courts across the road and a swimming pool a few minutes walk away. Mount Eden itself 5 minutes walk for a great view over Auckland. I began and ended my travels there - loved the place - it felt like coming home on my return visit.

I booked to stay at Bamber House for just 3 days on my arrival to NZ, i ended up staying nearly 3 weeks. Everyone was so friendly, after travelling for 2 days all i needed was sleep but i had arrived really early in the morning before the rooms were ready so i was led to the really comfy sofa and they shut the curtains so i could just crash out until my room was ready. There are various activities for you to get involved with throughout the week or there is a hard-drive full of movies if you just want to curl up on the sofa. The rooms and bathrooms are kept really clean as well as the rest of the house, the kitchen has everything you need too! I made great friends at Bamber house and everyone i met there was either returning for another visit or staying longer because they love the place. It is a MUST if you are in Auckland, just a 5min (really cheap) bus journey from the city centre, shops just round the corner and a stunning view of the whole area from Mount Eden just a 15minute walk from the Bamber House front door.

Room Tip: Room 20 is just off from the main house and has 6 single beds (NO BUNK BEDS YAY!) and is really spac...

We stayed at the Bamber House twice, one night at the beginning of our trip (room 14) and two nights at the end (room 1). We stayed in 4-shares. I wasn't a big fan of Room 14's location as it was closest to all the common areas and the associated bathroom was through the dinning room, so you had to walk through it whenever you used the toilet or shower. Room 1 was sandwiched between the Mens bathroom and the stairs, but noise wasn't an issue. It also seemed a little better furnished, but same bunks.

Overall Neg/Pos:

Negatives:
-Creaky & Shaky Bunks - I woke up three times during the night swearing I had felt an earthquake when really it was just the person above me rolling over which was disappointing!
-Drafty Windows - the space heater and dehumidifier made up for that, but may be a bigger issue in the winter
-No individual lamps for each bed - This is always a plus, but may be they just don't have them in 4 shares as we didn't run into this often at the NZ hostels
-Location - You could walk the 30+ minutes to the city center, or take the bus for 1.90 one way, It ran often, but if you plan to be in the City's Center for the majority of your visit to Auckland, you may want someplace closer.

Positives:
-Location - close to Mt Eden which offered great views of the City during the day and night
-Free towel's if you asked reception
-200MB of internet free upon arrival
-Lockers in the room
-Rooms weren't nearly as cramped as other Hostels we've stayed at
-Clean Facilities that weren't worn down
-Space Heater/Dehumidifier in each room
-Basket by head of beds -for books, glasses, etc storage. You can see what I mean in the first picture of the top bunk.
-Trampoline and decent sized yard to enjoy the suns rays
-Large selection of movies and TV shows
-Clean and well stocked kitchen - only thing I wanted they didn't have was a toaster oven
-Sufficient dinning and lounging space - again, furniture was NOT worn down
-Friendly dog named Zues (wasn't in the hostel, just the yard)
-Shower Availability - I never had to wait for a shower (NICE!)
-Outlets - Lots of outlets available for charging
-Reception - They were very friendly and nice and showed you around upon arrival
-Security - They reception was right next to the main door, locked when no one was in it. They locked all doors at night and the front door had a security code so you could still get in past lock down. Although the bathrooms didn't have locks on the outside door, each stall had a lock. I felt safe there.

If their bunks were a little better, I would have given it a 5.

Thanks for taking the time to write such an extensive review. I'll get the bunks checked as there is no reason for them to be shaky and it is an easy fix. Sorry this happened.
