All restaurants have something in common, greeting their guests but so few do it well. Hugo’s was an example of doing it well. It was warm, friendly and professional yet managed to feel like we had arrived for dinner at a good friends. The service remained friendly and efficient for the rest of the night. The wine selection was small (maybe to small) but the sommelier was knowledgeable and extremely helpful. The food was excellent and well presented.

The restaurant itself could be described as an upmarket and modern space which is competitively priced and perfectly positioned, 3-5 minutes’ walk from Queen street (the main street of our City) and only 2 blocks from a popular retail environment “High St and Chancery.

Inside a wonderful setting, great art and a perfect view to see the chefs at work in their open kitchen, the kitchen reimagines classic European style. Just one of the great features is that some of the dishes are barbecued over their inhouse charcoal fire adding to the delicious combination of flavours we experienced in every dish.

We started with the charcoal octopus with pickled fennel then onto the tuna, avocado and watermelon and finally the beef croquettes with spiced kraut (a Dutch delicacy) all of the three starters were absolutely amazing, the flavour combinations were out of this world, it would be very hard to choose a favourite.
For the mains we had the aged scotch fillet which in my opinion would be hard to beat!!

We found Hugo’s Bistro was very popular with groups of business woman and men, however they can also accommodate the single traveller looking for a dining experience that won’t leave you feeling like you are in the middle of the hustle and bustle of bigger restaurants. Hugo’s bistro can accommodate a table of x10 in one section of the restaurant with space for additional dinners in the front section.
Thank you for such an amazing experience and a very special thank you to our host and Manager Poihaere who was simply awesome, so knowledgeable and passionate. We will be back!!

One of my fave places to eat in Auckland. I had delicious fish of the day- Hapuna- today. Not big meals but very tasty and they are very helpful when I want ingredients modified to suit my fussiness. A friend had the steak and said it was one of the best he had eaten.
