If you're going to Auckland, the best day out is in Devenport. Catch a 10minute ferry from Auckland across the water to Devonport (NZD$12.50 each return) and make sure you have your walking shoes on. We spent the day over there. After brunch at the fantastic Stone Oven Baker & Cafe, we walked along King Edward Parade, past Torpedo Bay, to climb North Head, one of the volcanos which has great views and WWII bits and pieces. We climbed back down the volcano and returned to Victoria Road to visit Devonport Chocolates, which although a tad expensive, sells fantastic locally made chocolates. We then climbed Mount Victoria, another great volcano, again which offers fantastic views.
Don't waste your money on tours in Devonport - you can do it yourself for free, it's not hard at all.
